Welcome to the first Faulks Metal newsletter!

Thanks for signing up to follow along with my adventures. This first update will be quite the whirlwind, with degree show, New Designers, graduation and the adventures of my summer to cover!

Degree Show

The DJCAD degree show in May saw the culmination of my Tartan-ish project from the past year. It featured a selection of reimagined quaichs and sgian dubhs with bold, contemporary designs. I learned a huge amount from the show and met so many amazing people and fellow makers.

I was lucky enough to receive the Fife Contemporary New Makers Award which provided funding for some new tools and equipment (watch this space!) and professional development support over the next year.

After the degree show I was also thrilled to be awarded the Sir James Black Award for Outstanding Achievement, recognising my research into the reimagining of Scottish heritage objects like quaichs and sgian dubhs.

New Designers

Next it was time for the New Designers exhibition in London. I again met some amazing people, including the incredible Angela Cork representing the South Square Trust who provided the precious metal funding for my project. I was able to speak to the lovely Associazione Gioiello Contemporaneo about my work. I was also able to meet other jewellery and metalwork students from around the country, which was such an inspiration. Perhaps best of all was getting to spend a final week with my Dundee classmates before graduation.

I was thrilled to be awarded the Society of Designer Craftsmen Award for Outstanding Innovation in Craft and Design for my work exploring the combination of traditional and modern craft techniques. You can now see my work on the Makers page of their website!

Graduation

Then it was finally time for graduation, walking across the stage for my first class honours degree - in my kilt of course! Being able to celebrate the day with my family and friends was so special.

I am sad to be saying goodbye to Dundee (and all of the cafes I frequent) but excited for what this next stage will bring!

Man Pins

Over summer I had the privilege of working for Islay Spalding and Louise Forbes on producing their collection of Man Pins. I always look forward to a day working at Double Door Studios with such great company and nattering!

I was trained up to assist with their Solar collection, taking wooden blanks and adding inlays for the planets, adding pins and finishing them up with a satisfying polish.

The Sgian Dubh

I recently had the chance to make this incredible ebony sgian dubh commission with silver inlay patterns to pair with a Black Watch tartan kilt. I learned so much from this project, and cannot wait to work on more of them to push my skills and see what I can create!

Summer

My adventures of the summer could fill a second dissertation, but I'll spare you all and summarise. After seeing friends, travelling to Germany and Italy and moving to my wonderful new flat in Glasgow - I am full of inspiration and ready to get back to making!

Thanks for following along! You can always contact me with the details below. I'd love to hear from you. Cheerio until next time!
