Goal:
To investigate whether or not regular consumption of fortified eggs effects overall cholesterol levels
Method:
140 patients were asked to eat 12 or more fortified eggs a week over the span of four months. These 140 patients were all 50+ years old with or at high risk for cardiovascular disease. The second control group was asked to eat none or less than two eggs a week.
Results:
- Results for the control group eating 12+ fortified eggs a week were not statistically significant and did not show any adverse effects on blood cholesterol.
- "In terms of secondary endpoints, researchers observed a numerical reduction in total cholesterol, LDL particle number, another lipid biomarker called apoB, high-sensitivity troponin (a marker of heart damage), and insulin resistance scores in the fortified egg group, while vitamin B increased."
Personal Note:
This has been an interesting topic see develop over the years. I feel like it has gotten pulled in every direction with some people telling you that eating too many eggs will destroy your cardiovascular system or that you will have a severely increased risk of heart disease. Recently (last two years) there seems to be more research coming out saying that eating eggs regularly is actually more healthy than the public has made it out to be... Leaning more along the lines of real food is medicine for many common health problems. Maybe after more research, eggs could have more benefits than negatives? I think this study is a good indicator that more research needs to be done. One last point I liked that the researchers pointed out is that it's possible most of the negative "side effects" may be caused by how your eggs are prepared - cooked in butter or grease for example. The authors on the study state that a larger study with less patient self-reporting would be appropriate. What are you thoughts?
