WISE Women Acadiana Mentorship Program

 

 

The Region 4 STEM Network Center’s Inaugural WISE Women Acadiana meeting was a success! In attendance was Dr. Kim Hunter Reed, Louisiana's Commissioner for Higher Education.

 

 

 

The WISE Women program is centered on providing mentorship opportunities as well as exposing, engaging, and inspiring female high school students who are considering STEM careers. WISE Women mentors are women currently working in all aspects of STEM that are using their voice and expertise to increase DEI within the economic framework of the Acadiana region.

Saturday Robotics and Innovation Program

 

 

UL Lafayette hosted a Saturday Robotics and Innovation program for 60 children in grades 1-5.  Using LEGO SPIKE Essentials robotics sets, students completed engineering challenges in a fun way, fostering their creativity and problem-solving skills. This program also gave UL Lafayette’s Education majors an opportunity to practice teaching robotics, systems thinking, and engineering design.These activities are part of the ChangeMaker K12 project developed at UL Lafayette by Dr. Douglas Williams, Dr. Aimee Barber, and Dr. Peter Sheppard.

R4SNC Participates in the LaSTEM Summit

and LATM/LSTA Joint Conference

 

 

The Region 4 STEM Network Center was proud to be part of the LaSTEM Summit in Lafayette and the LATM/LSTA Joint Conference in Baton Rouge. Both events brought together educators, industry experts, and institutions to leverage the potential of STEM education and its alignment with the demands of the 21st-century workforce.

 

Angela Boxie presented a session titled "R4SNC: A Multifaceted Approach to Providing Access to Quality STEM Education". The session showcased the center's efforts to advocate and provide STEM education across our region through groundbreaking initiative involving quality teaching and learning, free of charge to students.

Computer Science Education Week 2023

 

 

The Louisiana Department of Education is excited to announce that the CSEd Week resources are now posted on the LDOE STEM Initiative web page. The CSEd Week themed "Computer Science (CS) Everywhere!" is from December 4-8, 2023.

Please share this information with your stakeholders and help the LDOE encourage schools to complete this form so that they can honor them.

This month's corner embraces the idea that "students can't be what they can't see." That's why Learning Blade is offering over 400 online career exploration lessons to empower teachers in creating enriching career engagement activities for their students.

The Ignite Project

The Capital Area STEM Network Center is pleased to launch The Ignite Project, aiming to introduce basic computer science principles to K–5 students in Louisiana through hands-on, project-based learning.

They are offering a no-cost 40-hour Ignite workshop for educators, utilizing resources like Code.org, Scratch, Micro:bits, and robots, with stipends provided upon completion. This initiative welcomes educators regardless of their background or prior computer science experience.

Ocean Odyssey FY24 Marine Debris Awards

The NOAA Marine Debris Program and the National Marine Sanctuary Foundation announced a Request for Proposals for the Ocean Odyssey Fiscal Year 2024 Marine Debris Awards for Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, Justice, and Accessibility (DEIJA). The program will award 10-15 grants, ranging between $5,000 and $7,500. These projects will support initiatives that investigate and prevent the adverse impacts of marine debris in communities that are underserved, underrepresented, or overburdened.

NSTA Angela Awards

The NSTA Angela award recognizes one female student in grades 5‐8 who has shown excellence of involvement and/or has strong connections to science; evidence of sustained accomplishments or progress/interest in science; and evidence that the student’s interest in science has impacted.

The student must be in grades 5–8, a resident of the United States, US Territories, or Canada, and enrolled in full time public, private, or home school.

Shell Science Teacher's Award

Submit your application or nominate a colleague for the Shell Science Teaching Award and Shell Urban Science Educators Development Award. These awards recognize educators who have demonstrated exceptional science teaching and are in pursuit of professional development.

The recipients of the Award will be honored during the Shell Reception at the NSTA National Conference in Denver.

Submission Deadline: December 23, 2023
