"GUERRILLA GIRLS SAY IT'S TIME TO REALLY SET THE CLOCK BACK ON ABORTION! (check out the fine print)" Original art by the Guerrilla Girls.

Hello friends!  We are glad to see you here with us.

We have all experienced a lot of changes and challenges since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic. If you are a person of color in this country, you have likely experienced unprecedented challenges, trauma, frustration, anger....No matter who you are, we send you healing, love and hope for a better future. We are committed to advocating and fighting for justice for Black, Indigenous, and People of Color, Queer, Trans, Differently Abled, Poor, Hungry, and all that are marginalized.

We have had several inquiries about organizing on Saturday, October 2nd for Reproductive Rights. We decided in March 2020 that we would not hold any in person events as long as Covid-19 is an active pandemic. Sadly, Covid-19 is still an active pandemic; one that is placing huge strains on hospitals and first responders all over the US, and mostly in Florida.

We are committed to not holding in person events during a pandemic and will not be hosting a rally or protest. If you feel you want to protest, there are events happening in Tampa and Orlando that you may elect to attend. Additionally, there are MANY ways you could stand up for Reproductive Rights every day! Here are some we suggest:

  • Volunteer for the Pro-Choice Advocacy League (P.A.L.) as a greeter at the only abortion clinic in Lakeland, Volunteers are needed on Wednesdays 8:30am-noon and Fridays noon-3pm. They have a closed FB group you can request to join. You may also email them at PALofPolkCounty@gmail.com. Tell them the Lakeland Women’s Collective sent you.
  • Make a monthly and/or annual donation to Lakeland Women’s Health Center or the local Planned Parenthood. Follow, like and support their social media presence!
  • Send your state and federal representatives a postcard or call them to discuss how you feel about the need to protect our Reproductive Rights.
  • Get creative! Make art and share it as a form of resistance. Be sure to tag us #lakelandwomenscollective and we can share it. If your art is available for purchase be sure to have pricing information on the post.
  • Share your abortion story. If you have an abortion story that you feel ready to share, share it! Sharing our stories normalizes the reality that lots of people get abortions for lots of reasons.
  • Have a candid conversation with someone you know is anti-choice. It is a good time to discuss why bodily autonomy is important and a right for all! Also, remind them that abortion is healthcare. 😘

We hope everyone continues to stay safe out there. We are still in a global pandemic, loves. Please wear your masks, stay physically distant (and home if you can), get the vaccine if you are able to, think of prioritizing others’ safety as well as your own during this time.

Take care, Ileah and Jess
