August 12th, 2020 a group of residents who believed in the value of a healthy democracy registered an Incorporated Association under the name Voices of Mackellar. Their purpose was to engage residents of Mackellar to speak up and out about their interests, concerns and opinions as it relates to the community in which they live through non partisan events, forums and platforms. In just over a year, Voices of Mackellar has successfully facilitated the following: 68 Kitchen Table Conversations over 6months, with a combined 430 participants Publication of the Mackellar Matters Report based on the findings from the conversations Established an active community of 920 members, and growing Coordinated a key group of core Volunteers dedicated to building a connection between our elected Representatives and the interests of their community members Hosted 3 successful public events with highly reputable guest speakers, 600 registrations, and over 450 people in attendance
We continue to grow, and remain inspired by the work to understand ‘What really Matters in Mackellar’ |

What Matters in Mackellar Series: Environment, Climate & Leadership |
|
|
Based on the findings reported in the Mackellar Matters Report released last month, we held an online panel discussion on the issues that represented the top 3 concerns of the community - Environment, Climate & Leadership. Panelists included Zali Steggall MP the Federal Member for Warringah, Northern Beaches Council Mayor, Michael Regan, Ian Dunlop Advisory Board member at Breakthrough and Richard Denniss, Chief Economist at The Australia Institute) and moderated by Wendy Frew. We were so pleased that over 200 people joined us on the night for such a thought-provoking conversation. Watch the video recording here |

Media We are very pleased to be receiving coverage in the media, a positive indication that we are making a difference; that the voices of our community are being recognised and shared more widely. See the coverage in The Tawny Frogmouth, Peninsula Living (p.36), Northern Beaches Advocate Pittwater Online News and The Manly Daily 21 August 2021 (you will need a subscription to view this article).
We’ve made many attempts and invitations to collaborate with Jason Falinski, our Federal Member for Mackellar since our initial meeting in April 2020. We were therefore disappointed he was not able to take up the invitation to be a panelist on the recent Environment, Climate and Leadership panel discussion. Voices of Mackellar is well known to Mr Falinski, and the Committee has stayed in communication with him and his team on all events and publications. So we were surprised to see Voices of Mackellar misrepresented by him in recent media. As our elected MP, we will strive to between maintain channels of communication consistent with our charter - ‘to be a conduit for members of the public and those representing them.’ (as quoted in the recent Manly Daily article) . Our intentions are to also resolve misunderstandings by communicating with Mr Falinski directly, rather than through media channels or third parties. |

We are thrilled that the past KTCs attracted well over 400 attendees which allowed us to publish the Mackellar Matters Report We are continuing to be able to engage all community members to have their voices and opinions recognised in our future reports and panel discussions. Please consider joining upcoming discussions if you have not already! We are specifically looking to invite participation from friends, family and affiliates living in the southern suburbs of Mackellar, including Collaroy, Cromer and Narraweena and all the Forest suburbs – Forestville, Beacon Hill, Duffys Forest etc.. We are particularly interested to hear from all Mackellar residents in the under 45 age groups but everyone of voting age in Mackellar is welcome to participate. Alternatively gather your own group together and we will join you to facilitate a KTC at a time that will suit. As a growing community of almost 1000 members, we hope to have your ongoing support to engage others living in Mackellar to share their interests and concerns about decisions which affect our everyday lives. JOIN US!!!If you are interested and would like more information on our online KTCs please get in touch by expressing interest here |
