Why am I running? “As you can see, because I’ve still got more left in my tank!” In 1990, there was a rumor published in The Capital newspaper that Parole Elementary School may be either closed or turned into another type of facility. When I heard this, I was appalled. With this action by Anne Arundel County Public Schools, out of the approximately 25 County schools that were originally built to educate Black students, Parole Elementary would be the last school that would exist in its original form. I mobilized the entire County around this effort to stop this possible decision. We were successful—to the point of our school moving onto the list for an immediate several million dollar renovation, as well as changing the name of the school, 3 months after longtime Principal Mills’ death, to the Walter S. Mills-Parole Elementary School. Especially from this endeavor, I keenly watched, listened, learned, recalled, collected, and retained a lot of history and skills, especially from my political mentors, including our former Ward 3 Alderpersons Norwood Brown, John Chambers (later Mayor), Samuel Gilmer, and Classie Hoyle, as well as our County, State, and Congressional leaders. Following in the Ward 3 historical tradition of “a succession and continuum of leadership”, when Alderwoman Hoyle indicated that she was ready to “step down” and asked me if I was ready to “step up”, she knew, and I knew, that I was ready. - Rhonda |

JUSTICE FOR ORDINARY PEOPLE Excerpt from my Capital Gazette Article, June 9, 2020 |
There is an old song that is oftentimes sung in our churches: “Just Ordinary People”. And parts of the secular lyrics go like this: “Just ordinary people. He uses ordinary people. He [then] chooses people, just like me and you who are willing to do… That will give their all no matter how small your all may seem to you because little becomes much… What you have may not seem much, but when you yield it… |
then you will understand how your life could never be the same.” The George’s and Trayvon’s and Tamir’s and Michael’s and Freddie’s and Ahmaud’s and Philando’s and Eric’s and Walter’s and Sandra’s and Breonna’s and Timothy’s and Melissa’s of the world were here, are still here, each and every day, to serve as a true reflection of our very souls. |

They are here, every day, to serve as our window so that others can look deep inside of us. They are here, every day, to serve as a mirror that we carry with us each and every day. | | |
