MYAN WA Quarterly Forum: Refugee Week

MYAN WA is holding its next forum during Refugee Week. This year's theme for Refugee Week is Unity. There will be a panel discussion around Refugee Week and the recent issues impacting young people from refugee backgrounds, which will include the announcement of the Federal budget and COVID-19. This forum aims to engage in discourse on how to support young people from refugee backgrounds within the sector and how to maintain best practices that are relevant to and put refugee young people at the centre of settlement, youth and community sector work. In this forum, you will get the opportunity to hear from people within the sector as well as young people from refugee backgrounds on their understanding and thoughts on the key issues facing refugee young people. Panellists will be announced closer to the date. Please contact myanwa@yacwa.org.au if you have any questions.

Youth Reference Group on the COVID-19 Vaccine Rollout

The Youth Reference Group is an exciting PAID opportunity for young people to work as a group with the support of MYAN and the Department of Health to inform and create communications that are effective in reaching and engaging multicultural communities. You would be attending 10 x 1.5 hour meetings with the Youth Advisory Group between May and December 2021, communicating and preparing in between meetings (0.5-1 hour) and participating in a local consultation event in your state/territory.

Youth Mental Health & AOD Project Officer

The Mental Health Commission has commenced work on the Implementation Plan to guide current and future YPPA initiatives and has contracted YACWA to develop and deliver a five-month youth engagement project which works with young people and key stakeholders (including the MHC) to scope out the implementation of a number of top priorities that are drawn from the YPPA. The role of the Youth Mental Health and AOD Project Officer will be to lead this project over five months. Youth Consultant - First Nations

YACWA has a team of youth consultants, who are all young people aged 18 to 25 from a diversity of backgrounds that assist us with this work. YACWA is seeking First Nations young people to join the Youth Consultants team to help us ensure that the work we plan and deliver takes into consideration the specific needs of this cohort. You will be working with the Manager Consultancy and Business Development to design and deliver a variety of youth-focused pieces of work, including workshops, consultations, training, steering groups, surveys, forums etc. among other responsibilities.  Refugee Week in the City

You're invited to join us to celebrate Refugee Week at our Perth launch event on Monday 21 June 2021 at Wesley Uniting Church, corner of William & Hay Streets, Perth. This is a free, collaborative event by local organisations including MYAN WA, committed to creating welcoming communities, and celebrating the broad diversity and rich contributions to our state of people from refugee backgrounds. The formal proceedings will begin at 12.30pm, and you are invited to arrive by 12noon to purchase lunch from the CARAD Fare Go Food Truck, a social enterprise staffed by refugees and asylum seekers, and engage with the various stalls which will be positioned around the Wesley corner.

The Hustle TV Show by Roots Tv

Any young people want to take part in this exciting project? Excited and can't wait to start this exciting project. Two groups of young people compete against each other in a series of business-related challenges. The hustle by Roots tv gives emerging young business-minded, the ability to take part in this engaging and exciting online Tv series, they will be giving several tasks in a short period to test their creativity, two groups will be giving $500 each and a list of items to purchase in local shops or markets around the Perth CBD whoever can bring the items with some money to spare will win the competition. The competition is for young people from 18 to 25 years old. Applications close 5 PM Tuesday, 27 July 2021.

See Me, See You: Cultural Responsiveness for Training Facilitators

Would you like to improve your training delivery skills with people from a migrant or refugee background? Whether or not you think you are an ace when it comes to other cultures, there is always room for improvement, this is a great opportunity to check your intercultural readiness, reflect and up-skill. Topics include: Ways to manage and train the culturally diverse participants more effectively; Intercultural Awareness; Intercultural Communication; Acknowledging Own Cultural Glasses/Bias; Application of Cultural Responsiveness to Training Delivery; Developing Intercultural Competencies; Synchronising Ideas and Actions; Complexities of Cultural Differences; and English as a Second Language as Global English.

Being Trauma Responsive - what it means in practice

FREE Trauma Informed Training for Mental Health Workers working in the community sector to assist in implementing trauma informed care and practice principles. This workshop discusses talking safely with someone who is impacted by trauma and teaching simple strategies to support recovery, respond to someone experiencing triggers and improve the experiences of people impacted by trauma when seeking support.

Refugee Health Seminar

This event showcases stories of courage and determination by refugees or those who have been forced to flee their home countries because of persecution, war and violence. 

This one-hour seminar will focus on health related issues and challenges faced, how these were overcome, resettlement experiences and how these have impacted the paths taken in the new country. This seminar is part of the Health Equity series that seeks to build a culturally competent workforce with greater skills in working with people from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds.Topics include: health and related issues faced in resettling in WA; ways to improve health care and outcomes for newly arrived refugees; and examples of health encounters that show good practice.

Bits, Bobs & Boobs: Sexual Health & Healthy Relationships

Join Ishar Multicultural Women’s Health Services for Bits, Bobs, & Boobs: Sexual Health & Healthy Relationships. You will learn bits & bobs on: Healthy relationships including your body and your rights; How toxic relationships are like and what to do about it; Different types of contraception; Sexually transmitted infections (STIs) and consents; How sleep affects your relationships; and the communities that you can reach out to. This event is for females and non-binary persons ONLY who are under the age of 30. Ishar supports women and those who identify as women from CaLD (Culturally and Linguistically Diverse) backgrounds, and offer workshops like this event to provide a safe and supportive space for women in different cultures to share their experiences openly. Calling all music lovers!

Enjoy singing and playing music from around the world, with the WOWS Cultural Choir and Music Group that meets at on Thursdays from 7pm – 9pm at Lynwood Youth Centre. 

Come along and share your voice and instrumental skills. You are welcome whether you are experienced or unexperienced, professional or not... as long as you love music. 

You will be learning with their talented musical director, who can play 10 different instruments and has experience working with choirs, singers and musicians. They will be working towards performing at events, including holding their own music festival in 2022! First session free. Children aged 7+ welcome.

COVID-19 Vaccines Multicultural Outreach Stakeholder Pack

The Department of Health has developed a May edition of the COVID-19 Vaccines stakeholder pack for multicultural audiences. This pack contains in-language communication resources and information about the COVID-19 vaccine rollout, the AstraZeneca vaccine, vaccine eligibility and vaccine safety. This stakeholder pack provides access to translated COVID-19 vaccines resources, which includes include posters, fact sheets, audio files, and social media content.

COVID health resources for WA's CaLD communities

WA Health has developed a range of video and social media tiles to promote COVID-safe behaviours and COVID vaccination to WA’s CALD communities. The resources feature WA healthcare workers and community leaders delivering COVID health messaging in English and in other languages.

Child and Adolescent Health Service - Youth Advisory Council Vacancies

The Youth Advisory Council (YAC) is a group of up to 12 people aged 12 – 24 years old.

The main duties of the Council are to provide: Advice from a young person’s perspective including seeking feedback from other young people; Feedback on the information CAHS provides to the public; Thoughts on experiences of other consumers (e.g. complaints); Input on how CAHS deliver their services. CAHS are looking for applicants with a range of lived experience including young people who are Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander, culturally and linguistically diverse, have a disability or identify as LGBTQI+.

Community Grants Program assessment panel

The Community Grants Program (CGP) provides funding to empower culturally and linguistically diverse (CaLD) communities in Western Australia to design, deliver and partner on projects that address their needs. OMI is seeking to establish a pool of community representatives to participate in grants assessment panels for the CGP. The panel member positions are voluntary and open to suitably qualified CaLD community leaders who would like the opportunity to assist in assessing applications for funding to support CaLD community associations working on projects that benefit CaLD communities. Successful applicants will be appointed to the pool for a one-year term which may be extended for a further period subject to agreement by both parties. Applications (date extended) close Monday, 5 July 4 PM.

OMI Alert: India COVID-19 Crisis Relief Funding

The State Government has allocated $2 million in relief funding to support those directly impacted by the COVID-19 crisis in India. The funding will be available to Western Australia Indian community organisations who are already working with partners to provide on-the-ground support in India. The grant program will be administered by the Department of Local Government, Sport and Cultural Industries. More information, including criteria and guidelines, will be soon made available on the OMI website.
