November Newsletter

#CommunityIsHealing even when we are #TogetherApart

Dear Friends,

It's been a difficult few weeks for our organization. On Friday, October 23rd, Melissa Legare Brown passed away suddenly and unexpectedly.  Melissa was a long time volunteer and Boon Project Board member, as well as a friend and/or teacher to several of our "Boonies" in our Courage Club. Her absence is already felt and we are grieving alongside a very large community of family, friends, and students. Please keep her family including her parents, brother, and husband in your prayers as they navigate the coming weeks and months while juggling unimaginable loss. Our organization is already working on plans to honor and carry on Melissa's legacy, and I look forward to sharing those plans with you in the future.

As an organization, we continue to navigate Covid-19 and try to find the balance of providing social support while also keeping our vulnerable population safe. We are in a bit of a "hybrid" model at the moment. We are alternating in person and virtual Courage Club events, while encouraging distanced workouts and providing support through Fitness Force. Our upcoming events are listed below in the newsletter.

Please read on to see what we have planned! If you have any questions, need more information, or would like to get involved- please reach out. Thank you for being a community of support to young adults fighting and surviving cancer in the Charleston area and beyond.

COURAGE CLUB

Our Courage Club gathered in person in October for a socially distanced (survivors only) outdoor Happy Hour. It was our first in-person gathering since our gala in March. We saw old friends and made new ones, and are looking forward to more events in the future. Our November event will be a virtual cooking class with Rhonda from The Drizzled Pear. Courage Club members should RSVP via the link in our Facebook group. Ingredients list has already been posted so shop before Sunday.

Save the date, Courage Club! Saturday December 5 we will have a morning of "Holiday Cheer!" (10am-12pm ish). We are still finalizing details as we watch Covid numbers and plan for your safety. Either way, look forward to your annual Christmas gift and a little something for the kids too! Please RSVP in Facebook event so you will be updated as plans are finalized. It will be a "drop in" style event.

Fitness Force!

Follow along in our Facebook group for challenges, opportunities to earn points for prizes, encouragement, accountability, fitness scholarships, and more as you "find your fit" after cancer. Want to get involved? Email katherine@boonproject.org!

November is National Caregivers Month. We are working on putting together a gift bag for a special Courage Club caregiver (or 2 or 3). If you have something you'd like to donate to a gift bag, please email Katherine@boonproject.org

Financial Assistance Grants

We're grateful to continue to be able to provide young adults fighting cancer with the opportunity for financial assistance. Applications are available on our website or by clicking here. Thank you to our generous donors who have allowed us to expand our programs to better serve this community, and to our partner doctors who have helped make their patients aware of this resource.
