AUGUST NEWSLETTER

2019

Michele johnson, co-founder and Executive Director of the Tennessee Justice Center, will be our guest speaker for the August 21 meeting. The focus of her nationally-recognized legal work has been children with special health care needs. In that role, she lobbied successfully to extend health care coverage to uninsured children in working families and participated in a landmark case establishing appeal rights for TennCare patients who are denied care by their HMO. As lead counsel, she negotiated a class action settlement requiring comprehensive reform of health care for 665,000 Tennessee children enrolled in TennCare.

 President’s Message

I want to thank Fr. Michael O’Bryan for being our speaker in July. While he has been our Spiritual Advisor for many years, I for one was not that familiar with his journey to the priesthood and enjoyed hearing about it. He is also retiring this month. Congratulations to him on his retirement from parish life and we wish him the best in these coming days of relaxation. We are also glad that he will continue to be our Spiritual Advisor even in his retirement. I know some of our members have already taken that leap into retirement and many more are contemplating what it will look like.

A scripture reading this week was the story of Mary and Martha. One of my favorites, probably because my family consisted of an older brother and me and my sister.  While I always identify with Martha, because I seem to be constantly busy with one thing or another, Jesus words resonate with me. “Martha, Martha, you are anxious and worried about many things. There is need of only one thing. Mary has chosen the better part and it will not be taken from her.” I think there is a little of Martha and Mary in each of us.

August is a busy month and many of us are anxious and worried about getting children off to school and/or leaving summer behind.  It is the month that we send our recent high school graduates off to that unknown – college. All the fall activities begin, ball games, social events, school events for children and grandchildren. It is the end of the lazy days of summer – long warm days full of sunshine. The days gradually will begin to shorten. It seems as if Thanksgiving and Christmas are not far off.

August is also the last month before the Pearls of Wisdom fundraiser and I know we are all anxious and worried about the ticket sales, auction items, models for the fashion show and all the small details that need to be seen to.  Many of us know the idiom “many hands make light work”.  We need everyone’s help to make this event successful for our scholarship recipients.

There are the Marthas and the Marys in our midst.  Prayerfully consider where you can help and let us not be anxious and worried about this, but know with everyone’s help and God’s guidance we can make this another successful event.
