FEATURED ATHLETE

June 2019

Jessica Zehn is on deck this month

as our featured CFK Athlete!

CFK Featured Athlete:

Jessica Zehn

 Age : 29

Occupation: Emergency Medicine Resident Physician/USAF Officer

Date Started CFK:  June 10, 2018

What is your athletic background? Rec Basketball and club soccer all throughout childhood and young adulthood. Started CrossFit to replace these when being an adult took over life.

What were a few of your goals when you started at CrossFit Kalamazoo?

Honestly, just show up and get my sweat on a few times a week. I had been doing CrossFit elsewhere for a few years and moved here for residency and was terrified I was going to lose all fitness due work demands.

What are some newer goals you have set for yourself?  Chasing that elusive beast, the muscle up.

What keeps you coming back to CrossFit Kalamazoo?

Good WODs, nice people, judgment free zone.

What motivates you?

Wanting to avoid ending up in the hospital with preventable disease like I see so many patients with. Having PT requirements with the AF helps. Also, not feeling guilty about eating all the sweets if I work out.

How has CrossFit Kalamazoo changed your life, lifestyle, and level of fitness? Starting macros to be more well rounded and healthier. Starting residency is a huge lifestyle change with a lot of emotional, time, and stress challenges and CFK has been a nice stable de-stressor and helped me maintain my fitness and weight despite the craziness of my schedule.

If someone asked you “What is CrossFit Kalamazoo”, how would you answer? A community of diverse people working out together to better themselves and support new individual goals and achievements.

What advice would you give someone thinking about starting CrossFit Kalamazoo? Just try it, seriously nobody is judging! We all were new and scaling to start and most of us still find things that are new and hard and scale!

What is your favorite CrossFit movement? Clean and jerk

What is your least favorite CrossFit movement?  Snatch and thruster

What book or move have you seen/read recently you would recommend? Why?

I haven’t read a book for fun in a while and if I’ve got time for a movie I’m probably sleeping. But I’m super stoked for the Elton John movie because I grew up listening to him and love him!

Favorite music genre/artist:

Indie, I feel like it can fit any mood or situation.

Achievements you’d like to highlight within your life:

Becoming an Air Force physician.

Completing the Spartan trifecta.

List a few things we don’t know about you:

I will literally get lost without google maps no matter the distance or place, I’m the worst with directions.

I lived in Ireland for a year.

I hate mushrooms.

In 10 words or less, what does CF mean to you?  Dynamic, fun, push the limit, exercise that is life applicable.

Annual Memorial Weekend Tribute WOD

"Murph"

Each year, we complete a benchmark WOD called "Murph".  This is a time for the CFK Community of Athletes to pay tribute to our soldiers.  It is also a time where we pull together as a Community of CFK Athletes to work together to take on this workout...to cheer and support one another to keep pushing through so we each accomplish this benchmark WOD.

"Murph" is in memory of Navy Lieutenant Michael Murphy, 29, of Patchogue, N.Y., who was killed in Afghanistan June 28th, 2005. Michael P. Murphy was a United States Navy Seal who was awarded the U.S. military’s highest decoration, the Medal of Honor, for his actions during the Afghanistan war. Lt. Murphy was an avid CrossFitter. This grueling workout was one of his favorites, and he would regularly do it wearing body armor instead of a 20lb weighted vest. As such, he fondly nicknamed the workout “Body Armor”.

he workout is as follows:

For Time:
o 1 Mile run
o 100 Pull-ups
o 200 Push-ups
o 300 Squats
o 1 Mile run
The pull-ups, push-ups and squats may be partitioned as needed. Weighted vests are also optional.

"I just want to congratulate all of you that participated in the Murph today. I am sure that Lt. Michael Murphy would be just as proud of you as I am. You all brought great honor to him and all of those who made the ultimate sacrifice for our freedom. OUR CFK FAMILY ROCKS!" - Coach Tim
