City Farm SLO is a proud partner in the 2022 College Corps program. As a Community Host Organization, City Farm SLO is advising 28 College Corps Fellows - Cal Poly Students who are working with us to complete 450 service hours in the areas of climate action, food security, and K-12 education. Fellows are aligning their experiences around their specific interests and career goals while powering our education, farming, and food security programs. So far, Fellows have been leading harvests, serving as docents during farm field trips, assisting with our Therapeutic Horticulture Programs, and providing support to our tenant farmers! Fellows are building technical skills in regenerative agriculture, gaining hands-on experience in K-12 education, and even driving our tenant's electric tractor! |

Therapeutic Horticulture at City Farm SLO This month we welcomed our new Therapeutic Horticulture students, 7th and 8th graders from Laguna Middle School and Los Osos Middle School. The students collected eggs from our chickens, foraged for raspberries, and harvested kale to feed to our sheep. Check out this video to follow along with the students on their visit to the farm! Our First Frost We had our first frost last week, so a lot of our summer crops will need to be removed from the field all at once. Throughout most of the year we have a slow and steady supply of green waste, and we have no problem running it all through our small thermophilic compost system. However, when we have an event that creates too much green waste all at once, we need to get creative with how we compost it all. We have several options: Make temporary compost boxes out of old palettes, and we’d take them apart when we’re done Make temporary compost piles mounded on the ground and cover with tarp Make another Johnson-Su Aerobic Bioreactor to create compost rich with fungi “Chop and Drop” the green waste onto walkways and along fence lines to create organic mulch that will compost in place Let the sheep and chickens compost the edible plants into manure
As long as we are adding the organic matter back into our soil somehow, we will be adding to the fertility and productivity of the farm. |
