NEWS & VIEWS

RESTORATION OF THE CHALICE From today the chalice, containing the precious blood of Christ, will again be presented to communicants; the first time here since the beginning of the pandemic in March 2020. Please do not intinct (dip) the host in the chalice. The Church teaches that receiving communion in one kind only - the consecrated bread - is fully acceptable; you should not feel compelled to take the chalice. If you do not wish to receive it, please move away from the altar rail when the chalice reaches you.

CHURCH BIRTHDAYS Today, Pentecost (also known as Whitsun), is the most important festival other than Easter. It is the day when the Holy Spirit was first sent upon Jesus’ disciples as tongues of fire and is the Universal Church’s birthday: Our celebration of the Jubilee will be the church’s birthday party too. And our church building was dedicated to the Glory of God 191 years ago this Thursday.

PLATINUM JUBILEE CELEBRATIONS We are making no attempt to compete with the celebrations taking place across the nation and Commonwealth, but our service today is a special celebration to mark this historic occasion, and the great feast of Pentecost.  We will have drinks and canapés after Mass, outside if fair and inside if not! Please bring sparkling wine and cupcakes!

ST MARY’S OFFICERS Congratulations to all who were elected or appointed at the APCM last Sunday, especially to Keith Jefferey who was elected as Churchwarden. Margaret Quinney will work alongside Keith as Acting Churchwarden in the meantime. We are delighted that Allen Bennet will serve on the PCC, and that Manny Osuwi will be our Treasurer in succession to Michael Mann. The full list of appointments can be found on the notice board in the porch.

CHAIRS’ APCM ADDRESS This is now available to take away and read at the back of church, and it can also be found on the parish website here. Our first listening exercise as a church family will begin next week and will take the place of the sermon. The question we will be thinking about is Who am I, and what am I doing here?

BELL RINGERS will be ringing after Mass today. Many thanks to them for helping us celebrate Pentecost and for all their ringing here.
