February 2020 News

My Culture Through Clothing

By Karen Williams | Founder & Director

I am so excited to share a special event SL is going to launch during the entire month of February! As a tribute to Black History Month, we will promote “My Culture through Clothing”. The idea for our February promotion was inspired by an episode of Project Runway that challenged fashion designers to create a garment that reflected their cultural heritage. Now SL is inviting anyone (red, yellow, black or white) who has some sewing and fashion design skill to create a garment reflecting their cultural heritage, take a picture, and then send the picture via email to sewendipitylounge@gmail.com. Subject line should read My Culture Through Clothing. Please provide your name, the culture(s) you are representing, your aesthetic vibe, and a bio (100-words or less). Include your telephone number in the event we need to communicate with you. If you would like to see the Project Runway episode that inspired “My Culture through Clothing” at SL, check out Season 18, Episode 6 on the BravoTV website, (original airdate: January 16, 2020): https://www.bravotv.com/project-runway/season-18/ep-6-there-is-only-one-you

If you would like assistance creating your outfit, we will be open on Thursdays, the 13th and 20th from 4:00 to 7:00 pm. The cost is $25.00 per hour.

But wait there’s more! On Sunday, March 1, we will host a Runway Show here at SL, featuring garments completed and sewn by those who submitted photos to “My Culture through Clothing”.

As you plan and create your outfit, remember that:

  1. Clothes are an integral part of cultural identity.
  2. Clothes represent periods of time.  Over the years, clothes have been symbols of protests (specific colors), empowerment (business suit), and address family connections (family reunion Tees)
  3. Living in America has often impacted and can dominate phases of one’s culture.

Have fun. I can’t wait to see what you create!

Garments, Fabrics, and Samples: Blow-out and Clearance Sale

SL has been in existence for almost four years, and we have accumulated garments that have been sewn and placed in our windows but for various reasons have not been sold. We have garments that folks have brought in for alterations but never picked up, as well as items that people have donated but we were unable to use. So, we have decided to remove them from our closet, giving you an opportunity to purchase these one-of-a kind garments! Look for our sale rack in SL the entire month of February. Come by and take something from our closet to yours!

Also, from February 10-14, we will be offering discounts of 50% or more on selected fabrics. Please come and take home great bargains. One week only!

Our African Print sale has been rescheduled. More details to come.

Special Guest Designers

Special Guests Designers will be featured in our SL Windows during Black History Month. More details to come!
