Sandra Rivera continues her celebration of Spanish dance in her new piece, Sustenance, commissioned by Dances for a Variable Population for their upcoming REVIVAL 6 performances. Explored is the generative power of a steady beat as reflected in the iconic Ravel's Bolero of which the dance is set to. Merde, maestra! |

Chell Parkins' film WanderlustDance: Puerto Rico was selected for the Manhattan Film Festival. WanderlustDance: Puerto Rico is a documentary inspired by aging dancer Chell Parkins’ mother, Nilda Parkins Garcia, and her mother’s homeland, Puerto Rico. In twelve days, Chell travels across the archipelago, interviewing family, friends of friends, and strangers to learn more about the US territory’s complicated history while reflecting on her bicultural identity through dance. Voiceovers share memories and stories about Puerto Rico, the oldest remaining colony in the world, set against dancing on some of the archipelago’s most picturesque and historical sites. The film explores the culture, politics, and people of post-Maria Puerto Rico, celebrating the resilience and compassion of the Puerto Rican people. WanderlustDance: Puerto Rico will premier at the Cinema Village on June 12 at 3PM as part of the Manhattan Film Festival. More Information, click here Brava Chell! |

A Year in Reflection - Celebrating Laura de la Garza Noble! |
We’re thrilled to hear what LXDEA Alliance member Laura de la Garza Noble has been up to this past year. Read Laura’s reflection on some of her awesome endeavors: “Since graduating one year ago from a Master's Program in Education, I was hired by the Bogota Board of Education to create a dance program from 6 - 12 from scratch, giving access to an entire population to Dance Education when they did not have it. During my time at Bogota, I have created a brand new curriculum which has opened a lot of students' minds to what Dance can be for them. I have had various students speak to me about their want to pursue their dance education further because of the program I have established. In addition to the curricular program in both the Middle School and the High School, I have become the coach of the Dance team and I have established the BMS Dance Company of which I am artistic Director. Said dance company has been asked to perform for a couple of elementary schools and is working towards performing in a state-wide convention. All in the span of less than a year. Additionally, I have begun working for the Ballet Hispanico School of Dance as their Hip Hop teacher for students aging from 8 to 18. We are currently preparing our end of the year recital after much progress throughout the school-year. I am currently a private dance teacher for a couple of students in New Jersey as well. I have also recently been hired to work for Rutgers Community Arts as both a hip hop teacher and a Latin Dance teacher in their efforts to expand the genres of dance they provide for their students. In addition to my work in education, I continue to be a performer, collaborator, and teaching artist for OCA dance company as well as a freelance choreographer and performer. Presently, as a choreographer, I am working on a dance film highlighting the violence against women in my native Mexico as a call to action and means to inform. Additionally, I have been working on a solo choreographed and performed by myself that addresses the chaotic relationship humans have with water. As both performer and choreographer there are other projects in the works that I am unable to divulge at this moment, but that I believe will be an exciting new voice for this community specifically. Finally, I have completed my second fitness certification, looking into beginning a third, and currently work as an instructor for two different fitness studios in Hoboken and Weehawken, one of which is looking to expand during the summer. I utilize my knowledge in dance and fitness as practices that inform and strengthen one another, which is something I emphasize for my students as well. For my future plans, I am interested in going into dance movement therapy, and I believe that my knowledge in other physical practices will be a great asset in that moment.” - Laura de la Garza Noble |
