#CommunityIsHealing even when we are #TogetherApart

Dear Friends,

This summer has been unique and challenging for many, and our Courage Club is no different. Plainly put, we miss each other. Social distancing is difficult, and it's counter to our resolve that "Community is Healing." After speaking with numerous Courage Club members over the summer, we are working towards offering a couple of socially distanced, outdoor, masks required, safe events this fall. We know not everyone is comfortable with gathering in person yet, and we respect that. We will continue monthly (at a minimum) virtual events through the fall as well.  But for those who are seeking to connect with one another in person, we are working to make available some safe options.

I encourage you all to continue following social distance guidelines and wear a mask. It is a selfless act that can protect others. As many of you know, people don't always look "sick" or "at risk," and yet a secondary illness can be catastrophic for many of those we serve. If you need a mask, visit our website and purchase a Boon Project logo mask (under "Community Apparel" tab). For each mask purchased, another is donated to a young adult cancer patient or survivor. So far this summer, we've donated almost 30 masks!

I am so excited to share with you that our 2021 Boon Project Community Ambassadors are off and running! Eight young adults from the Charleston area have been honored as our first class of Community Ambassadors. Please read about them here. They will be spending the next several months working on behalf of those we serve by spreading awareness about young adult cancer's unique challenges, educating our community on the programs and resources available through The Boon Project, and growing financial support to help fund our programs. If you'd like to give towards their individual or collective goal, please visit their campaign page here . Check out the photo below of our kick off event (via Zoom).

Please read on to see an update on our programs. If you have any questions, need more information, or would like to get involved- please reach out. Thank you for being a community of support to young adults fighting and surviving cancer in the Charleston area and beyond.

COURAGE CLUB

Our Courage Club has continued virtual events throughout the summer. "Check Ins", Trivia Nights, Happy Hour, Bible Study, and more have kept our Zoom rooms busy! As mentioned above, we will do a combination of virtual and in person events this fall. Courage Club members are encouraged to look for updates in our private Facebook group as we will post times, dates, and locations there for upcoming events. We are monitoring disease spread and social distancing guidelines, so all plans are subject to change. Stay tuned and email or text Katherine if you have questions!

Fitness Force!

July's FF challenge was to move a mile a day (31 miles in July) and many met and exceeded their goal! We moved over 500 miles as a group and several have kept up that pace in August. Great job!

August's challenge to give up an unhealthy habit or food is ongoing, and we are making plans for September!

As gyms begin opening up, many of our Fitness Force survivors and supporters are finding their way back to their fitness routines. Many are still staying home, and we are continuing to encourage one another to "Find your fit" whatever your situation. Official in person Fitness Force events are still on hold, but please keep posting those "sweaty selfies" and encourage each other to move! Remember that you can still apply for Fitness Force scholarships too! (See link in group.)

PATIENT SUPPORT SERVICES CONTINUE DURING COVID-19

While connecting with patients looks a little different these days, we've continued our patient support services remotely. Applications are still being received, approved, and funded for financial assistance. Boon bags are being delivered to new patients, and "coffee dates" with new Courage Club members have been replaced with texts, emails, phone calls, and "welcome to the group" messages. If you know a young adult impacted by cancer, please connect them with us. We are able to provide support even remotely.

THANK YOU TO OUR FRIENDS AT HOLY FOG!

Thank you to local business Holy Fog, LLC for partnering with us to provide a free cleaning/sanitizing fogging of a patient's home following hospitalization and treatment-related travel. We know this is a busy time and appreciate them reaching out to see how they can help!

We're grateful to continue to be able to provide young adults fighting cancer with the opportunity for financial assistance. Applications are available on our website or by clicking here. Thank you to our generous donors who have allowed us to expand our programs to better serve this community, and to our partner doctors who have helped make their patients aware of this resource.
