Nicole Hurley-Moore's newest book The McAlister Legacy came out earlier this month, and I was lucky enough to read an early copy thanks to my publisher Allen & Unwin.
I really enjoyed the dual timeline and the element of mystery, especially the gold fever running through the book. Nicole's characters are warm, her settings are always well written and it's a cosy read that will appeal to a wide audience.

Do you have a good luck charm or a special token that sits on your desk/in your office?
A lucky cat and an old Chinese jade carving of a weird looking bird.
Favourite exercise to counteract all the hours sitting at the keyboard?
I go for a walk or hit the elliptical cross trainer.
What’s your go-to weekday dinner dish?
Lasagne – I make it from scratch and it’s a family favourite.
Which career would you choose if money wasn’t a factor and writing wasn’t an option?
Hmm, maybe a medieval history lecturer.
Favourite book from your childhood?
There’s a lot. I was always besotted with fairy tales, such as the Six Swans. As for books I really love Tom’s Midnight Garden and The Wizard of Earthsea.
Which jelly bean do you eat first, and which do you leave until last?
I always eat the black ones first and leave the green ones because… ew!
Have you done anything special with any of your advances?
Yes, I bought a KitchenAid stand mixer. I love to cook and I’ve always wanted one. (Note from Maya - I have one of these too, Nicole. An invaluable tool for the keen baker!)
Which of your books would you love to see converted to TV or a movie, and who would play the leads?
The McCalister Legacy – maybe Liam Hemsworth (I mean who doesn’t like a Hemsworth?) and Adelaide Kane.
You’re snowed in on the side of the Swiss Alps with access to only one novel and one electronic device. Which do you choose?
My laptop and Pride and Prejudice.
Favourite Aussie book so far for 2020?
There’s so many wonderful books at the moment it’s hard to choose. I just finished The Secret Life of Shirley Sullivan by Lisa Ireland and really enjoyed it.
Best one-line sentence from one of your book reviews?
