A group of Religious School dropouts are studying Talmud together every Thursday morning! That’s what we discovered this past week in our Daf Yomi session— after I revealed that I had dropped out of Religious School in third grade because the kids made fun of me for being the product of an intermarriage, others raised their hands to share their story of dropping out of Religious School in their youth as well for various reasons— each of which amounted not actually to “dropout” but as we looked closer, we could see it was more like “push-out.” We were ridiculed or made to feel like second class citizens in our respective communities for various reasons— like gender or ethnicity or family observance level or family lack of financial capacity. We wanted to participate in formal Jewish communal life, but we were, in effect, pushed out.

And yet, here we all were as adults, committed to building this Jewish community of care and wellness. Committed to text study and pulling up a chair and inviting others to do so as well to engage in the time-honored tradition of studying and commenting on sacred texts. We are upholding the tradition with strength, adding our perspectives not before shared in Talmud Study sessions.

This theme of the underdog, or the rejected ultimately finding ways to provide purpose and value is a common theme in Jewish tradition. For instance, we think easily about Joseph who was rejected by his brothers, only to end up saving them in the end. We think about Hillel and Akiva generations later who each didn’t have enough money to study and who were literally turned away at the door of the study halls, but who ended up raising up great schools of learning and tens of thousands of disciples.

The misfits became the builders just like the verse we read in the Tanakh, in Psalm 118:22:

אֶ֭בֶן מָאֲס֣וּ הַבּוֹנִ֑ים הָ֝יְתָ֗ה לְרֹ֣אשׁ פִּנָּֽה׃

The stone that the builders rejected has become the chief cornerstone.

Championing those rejected by society is repeated many times in liturgy and Torah and sacred texts. In fact, allusion to the Exodus story-- an account central to the Passover holiday (ps please join our Passover Seder that will take place THIS Saturday night REGISTER HERE)-- that we were strangers in the land of Egypt, and thus drawing the conclusion that therefore it is incumbent upon us now and always, to always help build places of welcome for and by the stranger; places of wellness and places where everyone can, in fact, thrive. We are always to align ourselves with the outcasts.

I am proud that the members of our Daf Yomi group have found it to be a place of inclusion and empowerment; a place that values not only the written sacred words of the text, but also the sacred teachings of each participant’s unique perspective. If you would like to join the programs of our affirming community of care and intellect, please click HERE. We want to build together with you!

Together, we’re #keepingitsacred…

SPEAKING AT STARR KING SCHOOL FOR THE MINISTRY

This morning, Rabbi Miller joined Pastor Eddie Anderson to speak in Professor Najeeba Syeed's class on The Politics of Religious Hybridity and Activism for the Starr King School for the Ministry. They discussed the complexities and opportunities in organizing in multifaith contexts and shared some of their personal organizing history. Students asked great questions about preserving the spirit and avoiding burnout during this work, how to know where to engage, and how embodied actions advance the cause of ensuring all have the opportunity to thrive.

Each month, we will discuss two chapters of this work which will simultaneously address transforming our inner personal lives and also the institutional infrastructures of injustice around us. 3pm PT/6pm ET: 3/3, 4/2, 5/8, 5/31, 6/30 and 7/28 Register at: keepingitsacred.com/upcoming-1

HEALING CIRCLE & TALMUD TEXT STUDY EVERY THURSDAY

Ever want to jump into a conversation with the rabbinic sages of old? Now you can! Join us as we study a page of Talmud every day, adding our perspectives and the relevance to our own lives as we go along.

The more varied the participants the deeper the conversations. Thursdays 11am PT/2pm ET.

Currently, we are 100 members strong from 28 different states and 8 countries!

We are:

People interested in becoming Jewish

Members of various Jewish denominations

Clergy

Lay leaders

Retired people

People who are not Jewish

We are in our 20s to 80s, and we are everywhere on the spectrum of gender.

Build community affirming of one another’s journey in the sea of Talmud with us! Benefit from the wisdom of Jewish tradition!

What people say:

"Yesterday's class was superb!! I remain impressed by so many things that you do! You are able to keep us on track, share (some of) your knowledge with us, make all sorts of connections to the Jewish and secular worlds, and meet each of us where we are! Kudos to you!!"

"Talmud study has opened a window to that world for me. I love the anthropology and sociology of it all."

"The minority opinions may someday count as much as the majority opinions. It reminds us that things change the Halacha changes and we change each year that we read it."

"We have the opportunity to compare the Halacha we are practicing today with the one they were writing and studying in the Talmud... It has been very interesting how things have evolved how we keep the tradition in our own way."

"I feel very close to this amazing group and I'm grateful to Rabbi Miller for conducting it."

AND just prior to our Talmud Study, we hold space for check-ins and healing prayers for loved ones in need, including ourselves.
