The grief, the mourning, the readjustment and the redefining that occurs in divorce can be akin to a death in the family. As upwards of 40% our Jewish families are being affected by the possible Jewish Life Cycle event of Divorce, may we be ready to offer the same support and empathy as to those who have suffered a loss. By implementing small actions, we can support these families in having them feel that their Jewish community is a place of comfort. HIGH HOLIDAY TIPS - Take stock of your participants and members to identify the newly separated or divorced
- Reach out to them to show they can find support in your organization. Always best in person
- For Services and Events, make sure they are not sitting alone (including if with their children)
- Reach out to make sure they have invitations for meals (especially if they will be without children)
- As their financial situation may quite challenging, consider offering discounted or free tickets
- If it is not comfortable for them to attend with their ex-spouse, help them find a different organization
- Embrace their children for them to feel welcomed and embraced
- Use language that encompasses all types of families; ie; one parent, single parent, two homes
