New England Young Fishermen's Alliance

Preserving our working waterfronts for the next generation

October, 2023

About Us

Founded in 2021, New England Young Fishermen’s Alliance (NEYFA) has been a conceptual work in progress since 2017, catalyzed in 2019 when NH Community Seafood, NH Food Alliance, and NH Sea Grant held three “focus groups” called Dock Talks: Next Generation around the NH Seacoast, including commercial fishermen from a variety of fisheries from southern Maine, NH, and northern Massachusetts. Based on the responses from those focus groups and countless conversations with young commercial fishermen, NEYFA formed a 3-year grant funded by the USDA, FMPP grant program in cooperation with Yankee Fishermen’s Cooperative, the administrator of the grant.

Our Mission

Our mission is to empower the next generation in our local commercial fishing industry by providing critical networking, training, and resources.

Through values-based initiatives, we plan to preserve, protect, and promote the future of our small boat fishing businesses in northern New England.

Our Deckhand to Captain Training Program Update!

Jeremy Heflin has been helping DTC trainees develop their own personal narratives. Public speaking is a vital skill for our commercial fishermen to develop when it comes to telling your story to the media or presenting your opinion at regulatory meetings. We can't wait to see the results that our trainees come up with!

Voicing Our Concerns on Offshore Wind and Entry Level Permit Subsidies

On September 29, the NH fishing industry was invited to meet with Janet Coit,  the Assistant Administrator for NOAA Fisheries, who was invited by Senator Shaheen, to come speak with our industry to allow us to express our concerns. NH Fish and Game and Cheri Patterson, Chief of Marine Fisheries, hosted the event.  NEYFA was there and talking about offshore wind concerns and the need for an entry level federal permit  (lobster, groundfish and scallop) subsidy for young fishermen and women from NOAA. We are working hard on making this happen and we appreciate Senator Shaheen inviting Janet Coit to come talk to us. We also thank Moira Kelly, Acting Assistant Regional Administrator from the Sustainable Fisheries Division at Greater Atlantic Regional Fisheries Office (GARFO) for representing at the meeting.

Incorporating Seafood in the Food to Institute New England's Strategic Plan

NEYFA ED, Andrea Tomlinson has been asked to participate in a Strategic Planning exercise for the Food to Institute New England (FINE) organization, as the seafood representative. There are a series of virtual and in person meetings that she will be attending, with the intention of making suggestions on how we can get more seafood into institutions around New England, like schools, hospitals and prisons.

Requests for Congress: Including Seafood and Fishermen in the Farm Bill

As members of the Seafood Harvesters of America, NEYFA signed on to a national sign-on on letter, with over 400 other fisheries associations and processors, outlining the top three requests of Congress to include seafood and fishermen in the upcoming reauthorization of the Farm Bill. The three asks are: (i) Create an Office of Seafood Policy and Program Integration in the USDA Office of the Chief Economist; (ii) Promote greater seafood procurement across United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) nutrition programs; and (iii) Extend the eligibility for certain USDA grants and loans to U.S. seafood producers and supporting businesses.

An Update from our Content & Communications Specialist

Hello everyone! I wanted to share a bit about what I've been up to in September.

First up, the State of the Science Symposium in D.C.

I was fortunate enough to join our E.D., Andrea Tomlinson, in D.C. to learn all about the importance of seafood to human health and nutrition. My biggest takeaway was that by including more Omega 3 fatty acids into our diets we can combat depression and cognitive disorders. They can also increase the brain capacity of children when consumed regularly at an early age... WOW! Check out SNP's website to learn more!

Secondly, I made a new video! I enjoyed this reel because it included all the beautiful bycatch that I got to experience being at sea with Jeff Riccio. Bycatch refers to creatures caught in traps that aren't lobsters. When found, they get tossed back into the ocean to return to the sea floor. Check it out in the link below!

Support us by liking and sharing these posts so that others can view them and learn more!
