Happy (Virtual) Valentine’s Day! Send some love to your senior relatives

February 2021 Newsletter

Valentine’s Day can be a difficult time of year for seniors, especially if they’ve lost their spouse or haven’t seen their families in a while because of COVID-19 restrictions. That’s why it’s so important to take time this weekend to let your senior parents and relatives know how much you care.

While you may not be able to have an in-person celebration, here are a few ways to make your loved ones feel special for Valentine’s Day:

  • Have flowers delivered to their home. Let your loved one know you’re thinking of them with a bouquet of flowers delivered to their doorstep. Many florists anticipate a high volume of last-minute Valentine’s Day deliveries and may offer special customization options and add-ons with your order.
  • Drop off a handmade Valentine. Coordinate with your family to create and decorate handmade Valentine’s Day greetings for your loved one. Then, plan a socially-distanced visit to drop it off at their home or senior living community.
  • Surprise them with a family FaceTime or Zoom call. What better way to celebrate V-Day than by seeing the people who love you most? Reach out and coordinate a video call with your loved one on Valentine’s Day. If you can, invite other relatives to participate and join the call for an impromptu family reunion.
  • Drop off a care package with their favorite treats. Whether they love chocolates and cookies or savory treats, your loved one will surely appreciate a care package of Valentine’s Day goodies. Include a handwritten note and a small trinket or gift for an extra-special touch.

If your parent or relative is a resident at a senior living community and you have been unable to travel to visit them, now is a good time to check in with the facility to find out how they are supporting residents’ emotional and mental well-being (in addition to their day-to-day living needs). A good community will give your loved one access to the social stimulation they need to stay healthy and happy during these challenging times.
