2021 Lectures and Events

Each year we present lectures by some of the most influential artists using photography. Lecture passes go on sale January 23, 2021, and are included as part of the Medium Review, VIP, and Festival Passes. Individual lecture reservations are available, with no-cost options for people with limited financial means.

Keynote Lecture with Catherine Opie

The annual Keynote Lecture takes place on Saturday, March 6, highlighting 10 days of lectures on photography. Our 2021 Keynote Lecture is presented by Catherine Opie, beginning at 4:00pm Pacific Time on March 6, 2021. Admission to the Keynote Lecture is free for members of Medium Photo and included with all Portfolio Review passes, VIP and Festival passes. Individual tickets to the Keynote Lecture can be purchased beginning January 23, 2021.

Second Sight lecture with Fatemeh Baigmoradi

Our annual Second Sight Award is presented to one of our participating Review photographers, based on nominations from reviewers. Each curator, editor, and gallerist at the Medium Review nominates three artists whose work explores new creative avenues and whose ability to speak about their work supports enriched understanding of it. The Second Sight Award recipient participates in our Group f.16 fine print program and presents the first lecture in our annual artist lecture series on the third Saturday in October. The 2021 Second Sight Award is given to Fatemeh Baigmoradi, who will present a lecture at 9:30am on Saturday, March 6

Lecture by Farrah Karapetian

Known for her cameraless photographs, Farrah Karapetian’s creative practice turns the act of reproduction into one of production. Her large-scale photograms are drawn from sculptures and performance, recalling photography’s rich history of experimentation. Farrah’s lecture takes place on Sunday, March 7 at 10:00am.

Lecture by Paul Mpagi Sepuya

Los Angeles based artist Paul Mpgai Sepuya explores photography through portraiture, queer and homoerotic collaborations, and the material and conceptual potential of blackness at the heart of the medium itself. He presents a lecture about the development of his work on Friday, March 12, at 4:00pm Pacific time.

New Orleans based photojournalist Abdul Aziz presents a lecture about his work covering the momentous events of 2020/2021 and the influences who helped shape his career. Abdul’s lecture takes place on Satuday, March 13 at 10:00am.

Conversation with HereIn Journal and Han Nguyen

Join Elizabeth Rooklidge, Founder and Editor of HereIn Journal, and San Diego based artist Han Nguyen for an exploration of his robust creative career extending nearly 40 years. Transcending genres and embracing a spirit of experimentation, this conversation will explore some of the highlights that have propelled a creative career up to and throughout the COVID-19 pandemic. Han Nguyen’s work is in prominent museum and private collections across the United States, and represented by Joseph Bellows Gallery in La Jolla.

Outdoor Projection and conversation with Philipp Scholz Rittermann and Kevin Miller

Join contemporary artist Philipp Scholz Rittermann and curator Kevin Miller for a performance of Rittermann’s time based projections and conversation about the origins of this work. Philipp Scholz Rittermann has been working with lens based media and explorations of time through visual art since the 1980s.
