COVID-19 Education With 76 confirmed cases, Haiti is still under lockdown due to COVID-19. Kay Blada has been providing relief efforts and public education in the rural town of Hinche, where many are unsure what coronavirus is and how to prevent its spread. Kay Blada employees have been passing out kits containing masks, alcohol for disinfecting hands, and flyers to raise awareness. Blada: "The authorities are still having a hard time encouraging people to take the right sanitary precautions to reduce the spreading of the virus. So, we are going to continue to help spread the word, by using a small group of our educators on a door-to-door project. These schoolteachers will go through neighborhoods to hand out flyers and educate people about how to behave, which hopefully will contribute to reducing the amount of people who will be infected in the communities." |

Internship Program Kay Blada has long been working as a student organization on the campus of the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill. In the coming weeks, Kay Blada will be rolling out an internship program for university students, offering experience working with a non-profit in the areas of grantwriting, event planning, and outreach. Several students have already reached out, and we are excited to continue to make an impact in North Carolina, as well as Haiti. |

Kay Blada Spreads to Northern Haiti At the end of March, before the shutdown began, Kay Blada received its first load of plastic from Cap-Haitien. Cap-Haitien is a port city on the northern coast of Haiti, where Blada (our founder) was born. He has long wanted to extend recycling efforts to the city, located 55 miles north of our headquarters. About 5,000 pounds of plastic will arrive from Cap-Haitien every month. This represents a huge step towards Kay Blada's goal of offering recycling in every province of Haiti! |

COVID-19 Emergency Relief As with many other impoverished countries, Haiti is having a difficult time dealing with coronavirus. Though street collectors are no longer bringing plastic to the recycling center, expenses continue, particularly the education program and salaries of full-time employees, who continue to sort and process plastic. If you are able to donate, we ask you to consider making a donation to help Kay Blada get through Haiti's lockdown and the economic hardship that will likely follow. Any amount helps. |
