“Segmented Turning Made Easy”

Rick Cannon will demo his process for segmented turning. He claims to have made it simpler. He doesn’t use all the jigs that some do, even though you can. He doesn’t “mill” the wood to precision, even though you can. He is still able to create segmented work that has found its way into private collections and galleries.

This demo will show how you can create an elegant, segmented piece of whatever size you like, using flat sawn woods (exotics or local) and get to use your table saw and miter saw for more than a bench at the same time.

MSWG On Stage at the

Childrens Museum of Memphis (CMOM)

MSWG was part of the Fun DIY pop-up activities at CMOM on Saturday, January 13.

Children were introduced to how people make things from materials such as metals, wood, fibers and soaps.

The Metal Museum gave children the opportunity to explore pewter castings.

Several fiber artists gave children hands-on activities to see how to create using yarns. MSWG guided children in making a wooden top and there was an artist helping children make soap. In addition, children made and decorated wooden birdhouses.

Metal Museum – metalsmiths demonstrated pewter casting / offered a mini anvil activity.
Woodturners Guild – woodturners showed how to turn wood and how to finish a toy top.
Oh Sweetz! – soap making workshop bubbled over with activities.
Arrow Creative – got their hands going with interactive knitting and fabric doodling.
Adina Day – explored types of yarn, practiced tying knots, plus a crochet demonstration.

DIY project of the day: building a birdhouse

As you can see in the photos below MSWG was literally ON STAGE.
