January

Reject New Year's resolutions, uncover your hidden potential and the magic of music.

2024 is shaping up to be a challenging year for leaders and managers. Global employee engagement has risen to a high of 23%, though a staggering 60% of global employees admit to feeling disengaged and over half are seeking alternative employment.

The shifting dynamics of work, with more employees returning to the office and the prevalence of hybrid teams, have resulted in record levels of stress and reshaped managerial practices and demanded a new set of skills for success. I invite you to explore how I can support you in 2024 by supporting you and helping you enhance your life and leaderships skills.

The new year is here, and I hope it brings peace and joy to you and your family.

Forget Those New Year's Resolutions

Almost half of those who set New Year's Resolutions abandon them by the end of January and only 8-9% of Americans who make resolutions actually complete them. Here are some suggestions for thinking differently about changes you may want to make in 2024:

  1. Think carefully about what you want to achieve and select 1 or 2 areas you want to focus on. If you try to change too much at once, you may get overwhelmed and abandon your efforts.

  2. Set an intention - what guiding principle do you want live by this year? Choose one word, maybe "growth" or "adventure", for example.

  3. Set goals, not resolutions - tangible, Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-bound (SMART)goals, not something vague like "find a new job".

  4. Establish a plan and schedule concrete "mini-goals". Breaking down a big goal into smaller goals makes it easier to stay on track.

A Good Read: Hidden Potential: The Science of Achieving Greater Things, by Adam Grant

This book reassures us that anyone can rise to achieve greater things by providing a different view on achievement, emphasizing constant progress, learning from failures, and developing character skills rather than relying just on natural talent. It's about our growth and how we develop when we try new things, make mistakes, and start before we feel truly ready.

Grant brings new evidence and insights to demonstrate that progress depends less on how hard you work than how well you learn. He explores how to build the character, skills and motivational structures we need to realize our fullest potential.

The Science and Magic of Music

A study by Johns Hopkins Medicine found that listening to music can reduce anxiety, blood pressure, and pain as well as improve sleep quality, mood, mental alertness, and memory. Because music is structural and mathematical, your brain has to work extra hard to make sense of it. This is true of any music, but to really stimulate your brain, listen to new new music, which challenges the brain in a way that familiar music doesn’t. Listening to unfamiliar music actually increases the neuroplasticity of your brain, which is its ability to form new neural connections, making you more resilient, better able to learn new skills and adapt to new environments. Try it.
