Courage.  It's in the cards!

Hi friend,

When you think of courage you might imagine the archetypal knight in shining armor, loping through the forest on his white steed, sword wielded at the enemy, on his way to rescue the damsel princess in distress. But that's not what courage looks like on your average ordinary Tuesday morning, is it friend? Yeah, mine neither.

As a privileged "white girl" in America, I have not had to fight in a war.  I haven't had to fear for my own physical harm walking down a neighborhood street in broad daylight.  I haven't had to cross a border so my family could eat.  I haven't had to tend to a burden of overflowing Covid patients at a hospital and I haven't had to punch-in to my grocery store or restaurant job.  Sure, I show up at rallies and protests – but how much courage does it really take to join a group of similarly privileged folks holding up signs and shouting sonnets of "justice"?

In my little world, fighting the 'bad guy' (the poor agent on the phone while I curtly inquire about the mystery charge on my bill) isn't the scariest thing I do.  It isn't standing up to some task of physical endurance, or declaration throughout the Twitter-verse of some willful achievement, or humble virtue-brag.  Nope.

My most courageous moments relate to small, intangible things:  Taking an honest look at myself, my actions, inaction, and motivations; standing across from a friend and admitting I was wrong; a heartfelt apology; setting a healthy boundary and keeping it; practicing humility in times of triumph, empathy in times of self-righteousness, generosity in times of scarcity, and forgiveness after times of anger or grief.

My courage is the luxury of having to muster a subtler, inner vulnerability and strength.  Even so, it ain't for sissies.

What has been an act of real courage in your life, friend?  No really, I'd like to know!  I could use the inspiration.  Please hit "reply" and tell me about it.

We're still in the astrological season of Leo!  Leo is the sign of fixed fire, ruled by the Sun.  In the body, Leo rules the heart and the spine.  Some key words for Leo are:

Noble, brave, generous, pride, glory, loyalty, vitality, force, self-will, self-expression, the fearless leader, positivity, playfulness, radiance, confidence, creativity, steadfastness, protection, desire and passion.

Key-8 in the Rider Waite Smith tarot deck is the Strength card -  correlating to the sign of Leo.  A flowy figure with "purity of intention" taming a wild, ferocious beast – not with physical strength, but with "moral fortitude".  This card speaks to wisdom earned, faith beyond one's ego, taming of dark urges, peace with the inner shadow.  When this card shows up in a reading it can suggest a summoning of your inner resources as a means of resolution.

Tarot spreads can be as simple as pulling a single card in the morning, using that card as a theme to keep in mind throughout your day.  Tarot spreads can be as simple as pulling a single card in the morning, as a theme to recall throughout your day.

The most common tarot readings I do for clients are the 4-card spread and the 10-card spread.  In four cards you can see the under-current of your life, in real time, with a suggested "best course of action" in support of or in correction to it, depending.

The ten card spread illustrates more specific elements at play on your route's trajectory - regarding any concern, goal, or desire that's relevant to you right now. Seeing the forces at work in your life gives you the free will to adjust your own sails.

I highly encourage you to go buy your own tarot deck, friend!  They're cheap, fun, and beautiful.  Use it for play, exploration, and tapping-in to your own inner wisdom.  And then let me know how it goes!

Well hey, you did it again.  You read aaaaaaall the way to the end.  This was a longer newsletter...  I know that must have taken some real inner fortitude!  I hereby bestow upon you a virtual medal of courage.  Well done.

Thanks for reading and sharing,

Love,
