Old Schoolhouse Community Garden

February 11, 2021

"Every gardener knows that under the cloak of winter lies a miracle ... a seed waiting to sprout, a bulb opening to the light, a bud straining to unfurl.  And the anticipation nurtures our dream." -  Barbara Winkler

The garden application for 2021 is ready! If you will garden with us this year, please mail in a signed copy of the application with payment as soon as you can to the church/school address on the application - the post office will not deliver mail to the Old Schoolhouse.

We are praying for a warm spring so we can get some great seeds started this year and we are grateful for all this snow! It will water our garden well!

2021 Garden Application

2020 Garden Summary

During the 2020 growing season, we donated over 1000 pounds of produce to pantries, soup kitchens, church ministries, meals for the homeless, those in transitional housing and more!

The time and attention Al & Tom put into the plants & soil made the garden more productive and nourishing to the community. The cucumbers went a little crazy there on the hill, but we found homes for all of them! Toward the end of the season, Chris sauntered into the garden, and grabbed a shovel to dig right in and help out.

Our community gardeners grew some big and beautiful produce too! Brian and Chris's tomatoes, Lori's squash and Donn's asparagus were the envy and talk of many visitors passing through.

Every season we add something to the garden. In previous years, we received or installed a greenhouse, a fruit orchard, homes for honeybees and drip irrigation to name a few. The boys closed the garden in 2020 with the creation of a space for corn to be planted and planted several trees that will in time add beauty and shade where it is needed most.

We are grateful for partnerships and support from C&N Construction, Northern Illinois District, LCEF, The Pollination Project and Put Your Hands Together Food Ministry. Their support and efforts insured the planting and maintenance of produce for local food pantries. We also received individual donations to assist with our water bill which was so appreciated. We will do occasional donation drives and host fundraisers to assist with the costs of maintaining the garden.
