Oh, to be in England now that April's there - Robert Browning

I thought this quote was very apt. Spring is the season I miss most about my homeland. Late spring to be precise, when all the blossoms are out and there's warmth in the air. When the sun isn't just a light in the sky any more; it actually has some heat to it. Of course, as soon as this happens, all the pasty English people go outside and get sunburned.

Here in Colorado, spring has started in terms of new leaves and blossoms, and the heat is building, but interspersed with cold spells, and we definitely haven't seen the end of snow. April is when I have to start applying sunscreen because the sun is getting stronger, rather than because the sun is reflecting off the snow. I think I am actually less tanned now than when I lived in Europe, because I cover my freckly skin all year round. My dermatologist thinks I have about 200 moles on my body and they need protecting. In the words of the immortal Baz Luhrmann - wear sunscreen.

Now that my PSA is out of the way, on to marketing. I have a fun new workshop for you this month as well as top writing and productivity tips. And the latest on The Alkimie Collective, which we're starting to share with the world!

New offering: Messaging workshop

Some months ago I was talking to a prospective client about her marketing needs and she wanted help working out what made her different and how to talk about that in a compelling way. She had a limited budget so I wasn't able to work through my usual process with her. Instead, I created a workshop format that enabled us to get the result she wanted, as long as she did the homework first. She put in the time to do the preparation on her own and the workshop went really well.

I thought I would roll it out as a stand-alone offering for small business owners looking for help with messaging, but with limited budgets.

Marketing strategy - Why consistency is key

One of the easiest things to do in marketing is start really big and then run out of time/motivation for what you're doing and stop. And then all your effort is wasted. Talking to business owners, this is extremely common and a conversation I had this week reminded me of this blog series I wrote a little while ago. Doing something on a regular basis is hard, but there are some hacks to make your life easier. If you struggle with motivation or staying productive, this series is for you.

#TheAlkimieCollective

Ok, so I know last month I told you to follow us on Instagram, but now you actually need to because we've started posting! Very soon we'll also have the website up.

Also, Diane Pauley and I came up with a little something we're calling Alkimie Chats, or Chats with Alkimie, not sure yet! We're launching our first episode next week. Let us know what you think of our ramblings. We need to work on our lead-ins (the intro is a little awkward) but it was fun to make and hopefully fun to watch!

Convert like a boss

Making people do something because of your writing is very powerful. There's a type of marketing writing called conversion copywriting that aims to directly convert readers to buyers. And there's a few tricks to it that work with human psychology to encourage people to take action. Yes, it's manipulation, but isn't that what all marketing is? We are all trying to change how people think, feel and act. Enough philosophy, click below to find out more.

About me

This month's color is white again. But not snow white. White like White Sands National Park in New Mexico. White Sands is the largest gypsum dunefield in the world, engulfing 275 square miles of desert. It's pretty awesome. We went there on our vacation. I was going to make this month's color black like Carlsbad Caverns, 119 caves with incredible formations under the Chihuahuan desert, but my photos from them are terrible. They are both amazing places if you enjoy spending time in deserts, which I do.

See you next time.
