    UPDATES

HUAʻŌLELO O KA PULE E POʻI NĀ NALU

Hawaiian Word of the Week by Poʻi Nā Nalu

Aloha kākou! The theme for this month’s Huaʻōlelo o ka Pule (Hawaiian Word of The Week) series is school-related words. We hope these simple terms can be included in your everyday learning and growing environments.

Definition: "Learned, enlightened, intelligent, wise; learning, knowledge, wisdom, science. "

(Hawaiian Dictionary by Pukui & Elbert)

Also, naʻauao is the opposite of naʻaupō, meaning "ignorant, unenlightened, uncivilized."

ʻImi naʻauao - to seek knowledge

    Usage examples:

    • "Our aliʻi were poʻe naʻauao. They ruled intelligently and made wise decisions for the benefit of their people." ("Our chiefs/chiefesses were enlightened individuals. They ruled intelligently and made wise decisions for the benefit of their people.")
    • "As lifelong learners, we should always practice ʻimi naʻauao."
("As lifelong learners, we should always practice seeking knowledge.")

Utilize naʻauao in your everyday language whenever you get the chance!  Visit the Hawaiian dictionary resources at wehewehe.org to learn more about naʻauao.

E ola mau ka ʻōlelo Hawaiʻi--ka ʻōlelo kupa o nei ʻāina!

Long live the Hawaiian language--the native language of this land!

If you would like to see a particular Hawaiian word or manaʻo in the coming weeks,

feel free to e-mail us at nanalu@hawaii.edu.

    Poʻi Nā Nalu ʻŌlelo

Piʻi ka nalu, hokua ka nalu, poʻi ka nalu, a pae.

The wave rises, the wave crests, the wave breaks, then one comes ashore.

Piʻi ka nalu - Just as a wave rises, we accumulate skills, experiences, and knowledge that serve as a foundation for our future endeavors.

Hokua ka nalu - Just as a wave crests, we as individuals and as a whole reach high points in our educational journey—we understand our purpose, we create meaningful relationships, and achieve goals that propel us forward.

Poʻi ka nalu, a pae - Just as a wave breaks, we use all that we have garnered in our experiences to move forward into the next steps of our lives. Examples of this are graduation, transferring to a four-year college, and landing a dream job. As we come ashore, we continue on our paths to pursue next steps and new goals to improve our lives and that of others.

May this modern-day ʻōlelo noʻeau serve as a guide, a reminder, and an inspiration as you strive to be the best scholar you can be for yourself, your family, your community, and the lāhui. Best wishes in your upcoming endeavors!

    RECOGNITIONS

    KILOHANA

    Student of the Month

    Charles Santiago

My name is Charles Santiago, and my major is welding technology.  I grew up in Kahuku, on the north shore side.  As for my career goals, I am taking the Peal Harbor test, and if I donʻt pass then iʻm considering starting my own business.  In the future, I plan to work at Peal Harbor, or continue my education at HonCC, taking sheetmetal classes.  In 10 years, I see myself as a Journeyman in welding, or owning a business.  Poʻi Nā Nalu was very helpful to me through my academic journey.  Poʻi Nā Nalu helped my by getting me books, their tutoring services, printing, and with academic services.  I would like to take this time to thank Poʻi Nā Nalu for all the support that that they have shown me.
