SEPTEMBER 2023 UPDATES FROM STUDIO HROMI |
Starting off this month with some personal updates... I'm a student again! This semester (and probably next semester too, we'll see) I'm taking an anatomy lab at Grand Valley State University to prepare for the CMI exam next year. For those of you who are unfamiliar, CMI stands for Certified Medical Illustrator, a credential I have been working toward for the past few years. It has been a full decade since I've had any formal anatomy education, so I felt that I needed a hands-on refresher for the science portion of the exam. Even though it's just one class, it has been a lot of fun being a student again.

Last week I installed my ArtPrize entry Places I Have Lived at Harmony Brewing Company and attended their ArtPrize opening reception. While I certainly don't expect to win any of the titular prizes, this body of work is very meaningful to me so it is a joy to have it displayed at a venue that is equally meaningful to me. A huge thank you to everyone who helped me fund and facilitate the printing and framing of these pieces, helped me with installation by lending tools and advice, and to Harmony for hosting me and the other artists currently on display! If you're in or passing through Grand Rapids you still have time to see my entry in person until October 1. And regardless of where you're located, if any of these pieces speak to you they are available for purchase through AllArtWorks until the end of ArtPrize, and will be available in my online shop after that. |

Speaking of my online shop, some sections are a little barren at the moment. This past weekend I was a vendor at Eastown Streetfair, and the attendees there cleared out a lot of my inventory, especially the Grand Rapids Buildings prints (ESPECIALLY The Meanwhile). I'll be restocking everything soon, I promise! Click the link below to browse what's available currently, and check back in a week or two once everything is back in stock.

Here are a few interesting and pertinent things I've collected from the internet over the past month. |
AMI Diversity Fellows Announced: The AMI Advisory Council recently announced the ten recipients of the AMI Diversity Fellowship, an outstanding group selected from a competitive pool of applicants. |
The Medical Illustration Podcast: I will admit that I've been aware of Paul Kelly's medical illustration podcast pretty much since its inception, but I finally got around to listening to it and am currently making way through the back catalog. |
Artificial Intelligence and Copyright Law: The US Copyright Office is undertaking a study of the copyright law and policy issues raised by generative AI and is assessing whether legislative or regulatory steps are warranted. |

Here is a recent medical illustration I created for Honeycomb Speech Therapy, showing a "big picture" overview of anatomy associated with speech. This client specifically requested that I illustrate a person who represents her patients' demographic. I have a fondness for speech therapists as somebody who underwent a lot of speech therapy myself earlier in life, and this project was a delight to work on from start to finish. |

So far I have one market scheduled in October, plus a pop-up to celebrate a whole decade of my friend Sofía's daily drawing practice. Visit studiohromi.com/events for details. You can also shop online at studiohromi.com/shop and while supplies last at the Grand Rapids Public Museum Curiosity Shop and Scorpion Hearts Club, both in Grand Rapids, MI. As always, Instagram is the best way to keep up with all of my goings-on and behind-the-scenes goodies, but you can follow me on any of the platforms below, plus TikTok, Tumblr, and Threads. |
