APRIL IS THE TIME OF NEW BEGINNINGS!

After all of our winter storms this year, trees are budding and flowers will soon be blooming, bringing new beginnings to our world. The Good Eggs Foundation has also experienced a renewal through our Buddy's Fundraisers and our March is Reading Month book promotion.

We would like to THANK EVERYONE who came out and enjoyed Buddy's and purchased a set of books! The events will enable us to continue our monthly "Eggings!"

And - we hope to do more events like this in the future!

Now before we meet our April Good Egg, here's what's new:

LAST MONTH'S EGGING!

In March we EGGED Humble Design - Part 2! Humble Design furnishes home interiors for newly renovated homes. They do this for individuals, families, and veterans emerging from homelessness. In February, we provided sheets, pillows, and other necessities. In March, we provided bean bag chairs and sets of books for the children so they can have a reading "nest" in their new bedrooms!

WHAT ARE THE EGGS UP TO THIS MONTH? (Book 1, Chapter 8)

April - Respect

In Chapter 8, respect for the environment is the issue. Benedict lacks respect early on in the chapter when he throws his candy wrapper on the ground and says the wind will take care of it. Ms. Poach reminds the Eggs that it is important to not only respect people, but property, all living

things and the planet. She then assigns a special project for Earth Day. Things don’t turn out so well with Benedict’s project. He has to learn a tough lesson about the harm littering can do not only to the environment, but also to others. His lack of respect on his project even affected his dog, Scrambler! In the end, with the help of his friends, Benedict realizes the importance of respect and learns from his mistakes.

Now let's meet our

April

Good Egg!

Leslie Johns

Operations Manager

Humble Design Detroit

As you know from our last two Eggings, Humble Design is an extraordinary operation that turns a house into a home. How does that happen? The Humble Team would say a house becomes a home "when it’s a place that fosters joy, a place for experiencing safety, warmth, and comfort, a place of belonging, and new beginnings. Our hearts help us do the heavy lifting by offering hope with our hands, providing a makeover for a fresh start, designing a life changing space. We turn moving in — into moving forward."

I first heard about Humble on social media. I loved the idea of it, so I started volunteering in the warehouse. That led to volunteering on decos, which led to becoming a designer for three years. I moved into the position of Operations Manager last year.

We conduct an interview with the client and find out what their home looks like. We ask what their needs are and what style they prefer. We also ask about their their favorite colors. Ultimately, though, we are guided by what we have available in the warehouse.

I have so many favorites, but the best reveals are when the kids get so excited about their new rooms. Some of these kids have never had a proper bed so to see them run and jump on their new bed with sheer joy is what it's all about.

The greatest challenge is keeping the warehouse stocked with high need items such as tall dressers. Our client's homes are small and sometimes there are multiple beds in a bedroom so having dressers that don't take up too much floor space is imperative.

The greatest joy is the feeling you get when you see the client's reaction as they open the door to their newly furnished and decorated home. You can see how much it means to them and you know that the work you're doing is making a positive impact.  It's not just furniture that you're providing. You're providing this family with a home to be proud of and a home worth fighting for. In turn, this is empowering and creates long term stability.

You can go to our website and either make a donation or sign up for volunteer opportunities. We also offer corporate sponsored days of service for small groups.

In the future I would love to see an expansion of our reach. We could have several locations in SE Michigan alone and still not meet the demand. The need for home furnishings for families and individuals transitioning out of homelessness is high and resources are few.

Thank you, Leslie - you, the Humble Team

and all the volunteers and sponsors are

making a difference in the lives of families.

You truly live up to "turning moving in - into moving forward."

I hope you enjoyed reading about Humble Design Detroit!

You can find more information on their website.

Next month's interview will feature a woman helping

our community members with Down syndrome! So inspiring!

See you in May and

thanks for being a Good Egg!

Kindly,

Sandy
