FRACKING IN THE NORTHERN TERRITORY: Despite being elected on a "Climate Agenda" the Labor party continues to approve new coal and gas projects. Recently, the Labor government committed $1.5 billion to a support a petrochemical processing plant in Middle Arm, Northern Territory, despite knowing that this increases the chance of contracting leukemia for communities living nearby by 30% and that the plant will release 1.4 billion tons of carbon emissions into the atmosphere, making it almost impossible to meet our net zero targets. (See Guardian Article here) As one V4M member commented: "I think the next election is going to be very interesting. The last one was the "Climate" election in which the Libs lost a lot of ground to Teals and the Greens due to their Climate Denial. I think that by Labor showing their true colours with regard to opening new gas and coal projects, they may suffer the same fate. Interesting times ahead." Interesting times indeed. Please take some time to watch this panel discussion from the Australia Institute, with David Pocock, Monique Ryan and others talk about the devastating effect the government decisions are having on our community and environment, and what we can possibly do to stop it: The Australia Institute: Fracking our Future |
