Genre is how books are categorized. My debut novel, Tequila Midnight, is suspense. I love exciting novels like the Jack Reacher series that keep you on edge. But after reading most of the series, I noticed Reacher never changes. Whether he's a young man in the army or a grizzled 50-year-old, he's always exactly the same guy.
I wanted to write a novel where the main character had flaws and had to learn and grow as she made her way through the story. I wanted her to overcome the things holding her back and become her own hero - this is one thing all of my novels have in common. In Tequila Midnight, Jessica is surrounded by real danger, but she also has to overcome her own misbeliefs and bad habits to succeed.
This genre mashup includes suspense and the type of character-driven novel I love reading at book club. I can't wait for it to come out, and I hope you have as much fun reading it as I did writing it.
