Dear Gilles,
The HMB barrier is about to become a reality.
Our custom-made barrier was loaded onto a ship that set sail from Thessaloniki Greece on February 20th and is scheduled to arrive in Progresso, Mexico in mid April
All 45 required anchors were deployed between January 26 and February 6th in preparation for the installation of the barrier as soon as it arrives in Akumal.
The timing couldn’t be more opportune because the 2023 sargassum season has already begun and, according to the Satellite-Based Sargassum Watch System (SaWS), 2023 is forecast to bring more sargassum than ever before to the Caribbean and the Gulf of Mexico.
The entire cost of the barrier and its installation has been covered in full from the $390k in tax deductible donations that we raised in 2022. But we’re still actively seeking to raise the final $85k in “sustainable financing” to cover the cost of independent environmental monitoring and mitigation.
This project is an example of how Akumal Norte can work together to solve the big issues that confront us. Please be part of our community effort (and all the ones that are sure to follow) by clicking here to donate!
