Potential HUD Secretaries

The New York Times and Politico recently published articles about who they think are likely candidates to have senior positions under President Biden. At the Housing Urban Development (HUD), the top contenders appear to be:

  • Karen Bass, Chair of the Congressional Black Caucus
  • Alvin Brown, Former Mayor of Jacksonville, Florida who has worked at HUD
  • Maurice Jones, President and CEO of LISC and former HUD Deputy Secretary
  • Keisha Lance Bottoms, Mayor of Atlanta, Georgia
  • Diane Yentel, President & CEO of the NLIHC who has worked at HUD

Politico says Brown is "high on the list," Jones is "another likely candidate," Yentel is "in the mix as well," and Bass and Lance Bottoms "have also been floated."

New York State announced that it can only give out less than $40 million of the $100 million slated for statewide emergency rent relief, because too few people met the program's eligibility requirements. Only 15,000 people will receive state aid.

How President Joe Biden Will Reshape the Nation's Housing Market

It was a knock-down, drag-out fight that polarized much of the nation in the months-all right, years-leading up to Election Day, as well as over the last few nail-biting days after the election as ballots across the country continued to be counted.

How Does the Federal Eviction Moratorium Work? It Depends Where You Live

From state to state, and even judge to judge, a simple-sounding order by the C.D.C. on eviction cases is open to interpretation. Fending off an eviction could depend on which judge a renter in financial trouble is given, despite a federal government order intended to protect renters at risk of being turned out.

New York City Council Bills Aim to Curb Deed Fraud

Car theft, once rampant in the city, has been reduced to a trickle. But thieves have become adept at stealing something even more valuable: homes. While auto larcenies have plunged to about 5,000 a year from nearly 150,000 in 1990, some 3,152 deed theft complaints were filed with the Department of Finance over the past six years.

State Proposes Cost Caps for Rent-regulated Apartment Renovations

More than a year after New York's rent law was overhauled, the state has proposed cost caps for renovations that allow landlords to increase rents. The Division of Homes and Community Renewal's proposed schedule of reasonable costs for major capital improvements, or MCIs, drew mixed reactions from landlord groups at a hearing last week.

Mayor Bill De Blasio Won't Raise NYC Property Taxes

Good news for real estate owners: Mayor Bill de Blasio said he won't consider raising property taxes to close the city's widening budget gap. The mayor told reporters that raising property taxes even 1 percent was "off the table, period," the New York Post reported.
