Whenever I think about my grandmother, I remember her Sunday lunches complete with something roasted, potatoes, groenboontjies, pumpkin and pap en sous. I would always go back for another round of pap en sous and I could even eat it as a meal on its own. That's why a little company in Heidelberg recently caught my attention as they have recreated this delicious and homely dish, turning it into something even more amazing - Papstix.
Papstix has created a patented, ready-to-eat roll of maize meal with a tasty relish centre; the first convenience food made specifically with local food culture in mind. And they are delicious hot or cold. Papstix is a ready-to-eat meal-on-the-go consisting of a roll of pap with a delicious sauce in the middle - a new take on traditional pap en sous. They come in three flavours: carrot chakalaka, tomato & onion, and chilli beef soya. And the best part is - they only cost R11 each from the distribution centre in the Western Cape.
The Papstix head office and factory is based in Heidelberg, however, the only area where they currently have an official distributor supplying to the public is in the Western Cape. You can visit their website by clicking here. Distribution networks are still in the process of being set up in all the other provinces.
