Celebrating Our Decided Heart:
It is the end of the year. People are tired. They may even be feeling a little bit beat up. This is not the time to be introducing new concepts and deep strategy.
This is the time to be reflecting, refilling, and having a little fun.
Many organizations have holiday parties, although that has become increasingly harder financially and with remote work. So how can you celebrate your team in a meaningful way?
1. Mark successes and lessons learned. Whether 1:1 or in teams, take time to ask each individual what they are proud of from the year and what lessons they have learned. Not everyone is great at promoting themselves, making time and space for everyone to do this is a powerful way to lift one another. The lessons learned is so important as well as it normalizes that when things don’t quite go right, it can still be a step towards something better – promoting risk-taking and growth mindset.
Another important element of this process is that we can release things that might still be bothering us and move into the new year with a clean slate. Feel free to add creativity to this sharing. While everyone is silent during the share, afterwards the team can howl, clap or dance in celebration. People can burn or rip up the things that didn’t go so well last year. The important thing is to be present for one another.
2. Send a goody box of thoughtful things to share on a call together. Company swag, journals, a book, picture of the team, a personalized gift – have the team open together online and tie back to something you will do together. Example: if you send a coffee cup, have it be because you will start doing a monthly coffee chat together to celebrate one another. If it is a book, have it be because you will be starting a book club with one another. Whatever feels like purpose to your team, lean in. Show you know who they are.
3. Dance party! If you are in person or online – put together an awesome playlist of songs that will immediately get everyone smiling and dancing or singing. Better yet, ask everyone to send their favorite “group” song to you and make a team playlist that you can use throughout the next year.
4. Spend time acknowledging each other for who you are. Arrange a time in person or online where everyone gets a chance to talk to every person on their team and acknowledge them for something they have taught them or something amazing about how they show up.
We don’t have to spend gobs of money to feel special. We do just have to pause for a minute and realize the most precious gift is being present. For more ideas and ways to personalize your own celebrations, check out our masterclass on December 7 th.
