CHRISTMAS 2021

IN THIS ISSUE: Christmas and 2022 at Pedal Power, Greening the Bay, SeE Cycling Differently, United in Cycling, Art in the Cafe, Support us this Christmas

Christmas and 2022 at Pedal Power

Well, we’ve nearly made it through another Covid battered year (hopefully this new variant will not prove too problematic) and Pedal Power will be closing at 2pm (last hire at 1pm) on December 17th.We are still reluctant to gather large numbers of people together, but Friday morning will be designated “Yuletide Ride morning” and all members can cycle at no charge. We would like to encourage everyone (staff, customers and volunteers) to don Christmas-themed attire through the whole of that week to generate some seasonal spirit and we will have new wings on site for a special photo op!

Pedal Power will be re-opening in 2022 on Friday 7th January and there will be another change as we are going to open on Mondays again, closing on Sunday. Our aim is to return to 7 days a week from April onwards. The much-missed Musical Mondays will NOT be starting again until we are more confident about Covid developments.
So, important dates are –

Friday 17th December – close at 2pm (last hire 1pm)

Friday 7th January – re-open for hire

Saturday 8th January – open for hire

Sunday 9th January – closed

Monday 10th January – open for hire

Greening the Bay

We are very excited about changes we are making to our Bay site over the winter months. Due to the temporary nature of the site we are limited in what we are able to do but this year, as part of our See Cycling Differently Welsh Government funded project, we are at least able to make some small but significant changes, like introducing a water supply!!

We were successful in obtaining support from Keep Wales Tidy as part of their community garden project and have already made great strides into planting up the site. We are re-arranging our containers to create a more sheltered seating area with the intention of encouraging community groups and school groups to use Pedal Power as part of their exploration and enjoyment of the Bay area.

We are very appreciative of the hard work the preparation and planting took, so huge thanks to Dave from Cardiff Rivers, Keep Wales Tidy and their volunteers and Pedal Power staff and volunteers, all of whom worked tirelessly in some pretty challenging weather!

Pedal Power at the Bay plays a significant role in raising people’s awareness of our services and offers a completely different sensory experience from our Pontcanna site. This is definitely a “work in progress” so do keep watching as our ideas and plants literally grow and develop!

We will be having a grand opening in the spring and will keep you informed of the date closer to the time.

 SeE Cycling Differently

That’s what we’re all about here at Pedal Power, moving away from any stereotypes or fixed ideas of who can cycle and shouting the message that EVERYONE can! Welsh Government have invested in e cycles for us to expand our already incredibly varied fleet and we recently invited councillors and trustees to come along and take a look at what we have so far. Many of our orders have now arrived (after many global delays) so this is your opportunity to try out the joys of e cycling – please ensure you book in advance.

United in Cycling!

We were delighted to welcome a wonderfully bubbly and enthusiastic new group in October, living with the effects of stroke and discovering that doesn’t mean cycling is a no-no! Bernard, Mike and the gang came along for a coffee and the chance to chat about what Pedal Power offer. Once they’d had a go on a sidebyside and a trike there was no turning back and they all became members. One of the group said she had no idea it would be possible to cycle and she loved it! Regular exercise is proven to help with recovery – good for the body and good for the mind.

If you know anyone who may benefit from cycling with Pedal Power why not encourage them to come along and try for themselves? Better still, why not give them a gift voucher for Christmas – truly a gift that will keep on giving! Take a look at our gift vouchers in our online shop.

Art in the Café

During December all the art displayed in our café is available for purchase, making a truly unique and individual gift for friends, family or even yourself! There is a selection of oil paintings by our local artist Andrew Barlow and some striking framed photographs by Fabiana D’Ascenzo, all very reasonably priced.

Come and take a look and enjoy a delicious coffee and cake while you browse!

SUPPORT Pedal Power this Christmas and help us promote a world where everyone is included in cycling. We are the largest inclusive cycling charity in Wales and the significance of what we do is being increasingly recognised.

We believe everyone should be able to enjoy the benefits of cycling, regardless of age or ability, and your support will help us continue to offer our services and ensure that the future of cycling includes everyone.
