ACES AND PLACES

NEWSLETTER JULY 2021

Aces and Places

Best wishes to Frank Hall and Kerry Messer with their recoveries from surgery.  Condolences to the Field family on the passing of Roy Field.  Trish Haffenden kicked up her heels partying at the Boatshed with plenty of fellow members also enjoying the night and Trish is now also celebrating being a first time grandmother! Peter and Alys Woods are escaping the Perth winter travelling north.  Mike McLean has been holidaying in the eastern states whilst Arnold Jones enjoyed a break closer to home in Albany.

Junior Tournament

The junior tournament held in April was a great success.  The standard of play was fantastic and as a "Gold" level tournament, attracted players from across Perth and from the country.  This is a significant fundraiser for the club and we are indeed lucky to have a group of volunteers who made this event so successful.  The number of volunteers is too big to name however I will highlight Ken McIntosh for co-ordinating the tournament and Trish Haffenden for her work in running the canteen.  We are also fortunate to have the support of Preston Street IGA as a sponsor.

AGM

Despite weather that literally put a dampener on social tennis for the day, there was a good turn up at our AGM.

The Board for the next year is:

Colin Napier - President

Ken McIntosh - Grounds and Hall

Graeme Rundle - Administrator

Trish Haffenden - Ladies Captain

John Di Noto - Men's captain

Peter Messer - Social Play

Josh McKenzie - Social Events

James Williams - Finance

Conor Smith - Juniors

Mike McLean - Sponsorship

Lights Upgrade

In addition to the election of the Board, the meeting agreed to spend up to $35,000 upgrading our hardcourt lights to LED lights. This was subject to a successful grant application which has subsequently been received.

The reliability of the lights has been an issue for members and court hirers and it would be ideal to have a better system.  It will also reduce our running costs for electricity and repairs, have less "spillage" into residential areas and enable us to meet minimum standards for night competitions.

Soklich Diamond Dinner

A great night was held with a crowd of over 80. Congratulations to all the winners and particularly Anja Dokic and Zach Itzstein on winning the beautiful pieces of jewellery donated by Soklich & Co Jewellers.  Thanks to all members who made it happen, Chis and Lexie Soklich for their support and John McGrath for his contribution. Special thanks to the Mannar family who donated the cost of the pizzas and the anonymous donor who put circa $800 "on the bar" funding everyone's drinks!!

Chris Bates from Study and Play USA came over from Brisbane and gave a number of talks on playing college tennis USA.   Going to the US to play college tennis has been an important step for many players from Hensman and Chris's knowledge was invaluable for aspiring players and families.

AJ COCHRANE & Son is a family owned & run painting business which was established in 1933 by Arthur John Cochrane, the grandfather of the current owner, Steve Cochrane.  As an award-winning Master Painter, this business is capable of carrying out any painting project, no matter how big, complex or small.

Some of the projects completed to date include Santa Maria College, Contarf, the Weld Club, shopping centre fit-outs, new & established homes & apartments, multi-storey buildings & various repaint jobs. What distinguishes AJ Cochrane & Son from most of its competitors is that the business is run by master painters who have completed a painting trade & aren’t salespersons trying to win your business. The management team have the experience & knowledge to do their jobs well for their diverse client base. They know the correct paint to use, the correct finish to achieve & the best price for a competitive job.AJ Cochrane & Son agreed to sponsor our Club because it wanted to give something of quality back to the community.

Members are entitled to a generous discount off any painting job by mentioning your affiliation with our Club.  The COVID pandemic presented new & difficult challenges to the business last year which resulted in staff numbers being halved but have now recovered to 18.

Members are encouraged to contact Steve on 0418 920 077 or Helen on 9248 8211 if you would like a reputable painting contractor to quote on your next job - regardless of how small it might be. As a member of the Master Painters & Builders associations, AJ Cochrane & Son  has established an enviable reputation in the painting industry over many years so we’re very privileged to have them as one of our sponsors.
