DID YOU KNOW THIS ABOUT PIGS:

Pigs snuggle very close to each other and prefer to sleep nose to nose. Like

humans, they also dream.

Newborn piglets recognize their own names and even learn to run to their mothers’ voices. This is because the mothers’ sing to their young while they’re still nursing.

In their natural habitat, pigs can spend hours playing, exploring, and even sunbathing and if you find the right spot on a pig's belly they will drop to the ground and roll onto their side for a belly massage.

Pigs are very smart animals. They are extremely curious about their environment and are known to being smarter than young human children and can be taught to play video games.

Pigs have 15,000 taste buds, while humans have 9,000 and their sense of smell is about 2,000 times more sensitive than that of a human's.

Contrary to popular belief, pigs are actually clean animals. If they’re given sufficient space, they will be careful not to soil the area where they sleep or eat.

Volunteers - The Fuel that keeps the Engine Running at HFS!

Ever wonder what it takes to keep 130 farm animals fed and 10 acres well kept? It takes approximately 900 volunteer hours per year! Volunteers cover 2 feeding and care shifts per day, 365 days a year, rain or shine. During their shift they feed all animals, clean up each pen and ensure that all residents have what they need to fulfill their natural instincts such as nesting, forging and play. Volunteers also make weekly runs to the Vet, the grocery store to pick up veggie scraps and the feed store!

HFS is 100% Volunteers and 100% Donation Based!

Meet a few of our family members

This is Lee!

Lee is a meat sheep meaning he was raised to be eaten. A friend of HFS was living next to his farm and instantly fell in love with him. She bravely asked the farmer if she could save Lee. Instead of being sent to slaughter Lee was brought to HFS along with his friend, Mark. Because excessive weight gain is commonplace in this industry many meat sheep suffer from severe arthritis. And Lee was really struggling. We treat his arthritis daily with CBD (thanks to Gron!) giving him his quality of life back. Lee is now seen having many playful moments throughout the day and that makes us really happy!

This is Mochi and Soba!

Mochi and Soba came to HFS in late 2019. They came from a loving owner that was looking to rehome them temporarily. They bonded so well with the other sheep that the owner made the tough decision to let them live with us permanently. These Olde English Southdown (Baby Doll) sheep are the sweetest siblings. Their cute teddy bear faces and wooly charm instantly attract all the visitors to the farm. They're tiny and chock full of personality! They live with 4 other sheep, 1 Llama and an Alpaca. They are extremely affectionate and are open to hugs and kisses.  We feel very fortunate to be able to care for them.

A DUCK POND!

For Goose Springsteen, Patty, Bert, Ernie, Betty, Dolly and Jolene

Did you know that ducks need 6 to 9 feet of water area to call their own so they can swim, float, and preen themselves? The act of preening helps to remove dirt, and bacteria from their body and rids themselves of parasites! All this helps keep our ducks healthy! Which is why our next undertaking is to build a DUCK POND and larger area for them to forage. Ducks love to forage! Creating a DUCK POND AREA will provide them with all the necessities to live a happy and healthy life. As you can see from the picture, Goose Springsteen is patiently waiting in line for Bert and Ernie to finish their swim and float time. This is a big undertaking that will take many volunteer hours, materials and tools as it also needs to be under netting to protect them from predators as our rescued ducks can not fly. Won't you consider helping us build a new duck pond area by clicking the button below.

Vegan for the Enviroment

I think its safe to say that most people are concerned about the environment. It's not only our home but everything that keeps us alive. Caring for the environment will protect the ecosystem and humanity.

It will also help combat world hunger. In fact, 70% of the grain grown in the US today is fed to animals raised for meat. Each year an estimated 41 million tons of plant protein is fed to US livestock to produce an estimated 7 million tons of animal protein for human consumption. Think about that for a second. The US could feed 800 million people with the grain it grows to feed livestock.

Eating plant based also helps with water conservation. Currently, 1 billion people worldwide do not have access to any water sources. Growing food for our food consumes a tremendous amount of this resource. Did you know, it takes more than 2,400 gallons of water to produce just 1 pound of meat. And only 25 galloons of water to grow one pound of wheat.

In the US, 99% of meat, dairy and eggs come from factory farms. The discharge of factory farming waste affects the aquatic ecosystems as it ends up polluting larger water bodies, killing fish and depleting food and economic resources of the communities.

And of course, livestock accounts for 51% of all greenhouse gases which is more than the transportation sector combined. Did you know that the world's five biggest meat and dairy producers emit more combined greenhouse gases than ExxonMobil, Shell or BP, the top three oil production companies. Research has found that greenhouse gas emissions from 35 of the largest producers of beef, pork, poultry and dairy are reaching dangerous levels due to unregulated growth and governmental subsidies to ensure inexpensive production costs and supplies such as animal grain.

It is an unsustainable diet in a world with a population expected to reach nearly 10 billion by 2050. A vegan diet is the single biggest way to reduce your impact on planet Earth. A recent study in The Lancet concluded that a dietary shift toward plant foods and away from animal products is vital for promoting human health and the health of our planet.  Did you know that the carbon footprint of a vegan is 1.5 tons while the carbon footprint of a meat eater is 3.3 tons.

Your carbon foot print is the sum of all emissions of CO2 which are induced by your activities in a given time frame. The US has one of the highest rates in the world. To have the best chance of avoiding a 2 degree rise in global temperatures, the average global carbon footprint per year needs to drop under 2 tons by 2050. You have the power to do your part by simply changing how you eat!
