I think its safe to say that most people are concerned about the environment. It's not only our home but everything that keeps us alive. Caring for the environment will protect the ecosystem and humanity.
It will also help combat world hunger. In fact, 70% of the grain grown in the US today is fed to animals raised for meat. Each year an estimated 41 million tons of plant protein is fed to US livestock to produce an estimated 7 million tons of animal protein for human consumption. Think about that for a second. The US could feed 800 million people with the grain it grows to feed livestock.
Eating plant based also helps with water conservation. Currently, 1 billion people worldwide do not have access to any water sources. Growing food for our food consumes a tremendous amount of this resource. Did you know, it takes more than 2,400 gallons of water to produce just 1 pound of meat. And only 25 galloons of water to grow one pound of wheat.
In the US, 99% of meat, dairy and eggs come from factory farms. The discharge of factory farming waste affects the aquatic ecosystems as it ends up polluting larger water bodies, killing fish and depleting food and economic resources of the communities.
And of course, livestock accounts for 51% of all greenhouse gases which is more than the transportation sector combined. Did you know that the world's five biggest meat and dairy producers emit more combined greenhouse gases than ExxonMobil, Shell or BP, the top three oil production companies. Research has found that greenhouse gas emissions from 35 of the largest producers of beef, pork, poultry and dairy are reaching dangerous levels due to unregulated growth and governmental subsidies to ensure inexpensive production costs and supplies such as animal grain.
It is an unsustainable diet in a world with a population expected to reach nearly 10 billion by 2050. A vegan diet is the single biggest way to reduce your impact on planet Earth. A recent study in The Lancet concluded that a dietary shift toward plant foods and away from animal products is vital for promoting human health and the health of our planet. Did you know that the carbon footprint of a vegan is 1.5 tons while the carbon footprint of a meat eater is 3.3 tons.
Your carbon foot print is the sum of all emissions of CO2 which are induced by your activities in a given time frame. The US has one of the highest rates in the world. To have the best chance of avoiding a 2 degree rise in global temperatures, the average global carbon footprint per year needs to drop under 2 tons by 2050. You have the power to do your part by simply changing how you eat!
