What's happening in the world of DOC?

We've had our first event, and it's off to a great start! Here's what we're excited to share as we look to the future.

What We’re Up To

We hit our first big milestone this month, running a demo workshop with over 20 people in attendance. Along with info about DOC and our vision, we discussed a set of skills called Reflective Listening (see inset), and gave participants the chance to try them out with a practice partner.

Reflective Listening

Listen to the heart 🩺❤️

•Reflect on what values they’re emphasizing

•Reflect back what you heard them say

Examine the heart 🔎❤️

•Ask about ways those values
might be expressed

•Ask about experiences that
might’ve helped shape those values

With only an hour together, we kept things simple, with only listening skills; for organizations that prioritize short sessions like this, perspective sharing skills will be covered in sessions that come later in the program.

Still, with only this single set of skills, participants reported some real benefits. Half of them reported they were more confident they could have productive conversations with

people they disagreed with, with a small overall average gain of 4%.

More significant was the gain in hope "that we can have effective conversations about issues affecting our country.” Two-thirds of participants said they're more hopeful now, and the average increase across the full group from before the workshop was 14%.

We also received strong overall ratings for the workshop and its different aspects, and most encouraging was the high level of engagement people felt during their practice conversations.

And we got some great input about how to improve upon this start. We’ll be further refining DOC’s positioning based on it—especially regarding how much political discussion should be centered within our work, versus pure communication skills.

In case you missed it...

We're now in planning for the next demo workshop, which will happen in late June. If you'd like to attend, you can let us know what days and times work for you with a quick poll.

I was inspired by this quote to think about how it applies to us, and how important it is to protect the lifeblood of our society, the free exchange of ideas.
