PORTREEVE'S POST

The dust is just settling after the last Platinum Jubilee street party and it's around this time that we begin to reminisce over the events of the last few days - what we did and what stood out, who we saw and how great it was to see people - particularly given that this is the first event of this scale in the town since the start of the pandemic.

So, here is a rundown of the highlights, there's more online at www.ashburtonportreeve.info!

NEWS

What a fantastic and historic Platinum Jubilee Celebration that was!  An extraordinary year in which to be the Portreeve or Bailiff of this historic town and a part of this amazing community.  So much took place, and whilst it has been a fantastic week, I'm sure we're all glad to be able to put it behind us and relax!

Karen and I have also been helping establish the new Ashburton Safe Haven Group (www.ashburtonsafehaven.org)in response to the humanitarian crisis in Ukraine.  We also lent a hand to fit wires for the sensory garden in St Andrews Churchyard and set up the Jubilee/RBL Centenary memorial arch at the Legion Hut.  Finally we met some hedgehogs and hoglets when we delivered some refurbished laptops to ELM Wildlife Rescue!

The Bailiff's Byngo & Game Show, was postponed due to our host catching Covid - it has been rescheduled to Friday 1st July.  If you have tickets for the 5th March date, they will be valid for the rescheduled event.  It promises to be a great evening in support of Woodlander's Pre-School with a fully stocked bar and raffle.  So come on down and bring your friends!

OLDS

The Chapel of St Lawrence currently has the former Portreeve's robes on display which have been loaned by the Museum.  This is in addition to the display of information about past Portreeves, including including the Portreeves' books and the record books of past Portreeve’s activities, that have been on display for many years.

The Chapel is open on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays from 2-4pm and Saturday from 10am-12 noon.

DIARY

In the first week of May we enjoyed a concert at St Lawrence Chapel by the Incon Singers and were honoured to attend the unveiling of a memorial bench for Mary Witt in St Andrews' Churchyard.  On May the 10th the Town Council held their AGM and Philip Vogel was elected Mayor - you can find out about his aims for his time in office on ashburton.org.  We were also invited to the Past Portreeve's Dinner - the irony of my attendance featured in my speech.  We attended 2 coffee mornings in May - the Pensioners' and the Poppy Appeal's.  Finally, the committee convened to review the rule book met for the first time!

CALENDAR

There are a small number of events in the Calendar for this month.  The Queen's official birthday is celebrated on Saturday the 11th; we will be celebrating the Ashburton RBL Branch Centenary and finally we are planning a Portreeve's XI vs Mayor's XI Cricket Match.  Our online calendar shows dates of all the planned events and is updated frequently!

FUNDRAISING

The Portreeve's Pick campaign has now raised over £300 and has helped to fund the "mystery tour" for the Spring Chickens and will help to provide equipment for the Dartmoor Search and Rescue Team.  Why not enjoy a meal out and support your community at the same time!

We have also now funded the memorial arch and garden at the Legion Hut and plants for the sensory garden in St Andrews Churchyard.

We’re  now fundraising for a public defibrillator.  The total cost is around £1,500 - so we need your help: ashburtonportreeve.info/defibrillator.
