Are you ready to decarbonize Haywood County? You bet the EAC is!  Thing is, we need your help. To support our growing organization and programming, we're excited to announce the raffle of a fully customizable Rivian R1T or R1S to support the deployment of renewable energy, the buildout of robust EV charging, and programs to help our low-income neighbors enjoy energy savings. This EV raffle will launch on April 6, 2024. That's the first day you can buy a ticket by going to the raffle website: www.eacevraffle.org

The Rivian R1 series vehicles boast blistering 3 second 0-60 times, multiple off-road modes for wherever your adventure takes you, adaptive air suspension, and a range of up to 350 miles. Consumer Reports named Rivian as the Most-Loved Car Brand, and Rivian received the J.D. Power award for the most satisfying ownership experience in a premium battery electric vehicle (BEV) category. And to think that a Rivian could be yours!

COMPOSTING UPDATE

AT HOME

EAC members are encouraged to compost all easily compostable materials like leaves, grass clippings, and food scraps at home to prevent organic material from going to the landfill and producing methane gas, a greenhouse emission 80 times more potent than carbon dioxide.

Composting yields a nutrient-rich, black soil amendment for use in your garden. Get started with home composting using this link.

COMMERCIAL SERVICE

No space to compost where you live? A commercial composting service, CompostAVL, offers residential and restaurant collections of organic matter and, with some exceptions, "anything that was once living." You can receive the "black gold" back too! A pilot program launched last year in Haywood County garnered 22 subscribers, after a strong start of 28. The goal is 50 subscribers to sustain the service. Action Alert:

Ban Single-Use Polystyrene Foam

From our friends at NC PIRG (Public Interest Research Group)

If you drink your morning coffee from a foam cup, you may be getting a side of toxic chemicals with it. Polystyrene foam products, like most plastic products, are made with petroleum and a host of other highly polluting ingredients that can leach into our food and drink.

In fact, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services has listed styrene -- the chemical released from polystyrene containers -- as a potential carcinogen. Polystyrene contains toxic chemicals and generates microplastic waste, and yet it's served right alongside our food.

The waste from our polystyrene food and drink containers is going to outlive us all, even though we only use these products for a few minutes. Curbing the production of single-use polystyrene foam will help us move one step closer toward zero waste.

This month, we are asking our supporters to take action to encourage Governor Cooper to ban single-use polystyrene foam (styrofoam) products. Eleven states have passed legislation banning single-use foam containers.
