August 18th, 19th, and 20th

June 3, 2022- The Town of Sturgis will again host the Sturgis South Bike Rally this year. After two years of not having the rally, Sturgis is excited to invite bikers and families back to enjoy the long-standing tradition.

The weekend will open Thursday, August 18th at 3:00 p.m. with bikers arriving, kid games and food vendors. Music by Jodie Ross will begin at 6:00 p.m. Vendors will return Friday afternoon with the Friday Night Dinner Ride to line up at 3:30 p.m. and begin at 4:00 p.m.  Full Circle Party Band will provide entertainment Friday night following the Dinner Ride. The Rally’s main music event will be Saturday night with Honey Boy and Boots opening for The Jason Miller Band at Diane Jackson Memorial Park.

“We couldn’t be more excited to have the Rally back in Sturgis this year,” Mayor of Sturgis, Leah Brown said. “We have a weekend packed full of great things for bikers and the whole family to enjoy. We look forward to seeing a great crowd and continuing this fun event.”

Kirby Jackson

2022 Inductee into the MSU M-Club Hall of Fame

June 1, 2022- Sturgis' very own Kirby Jackson was selected to be inducted into the 2022 M-Club Hall of Fame Class at Mississippi State.

Prior to attending MSU Jackson played quarterback and safety for the Sturgis Lions football team. In 1982, Jackson guided the team to win the state championship. He was a 1983 graduate of Sturgis High School and currently resides in Gwinnett County Georgia .

Jackson's football career at MSU spanned four years, three of which he was a starter. In his position as defensive back he led in interceptions in both 1984 and 1985. He finished his career at MSU with 196 tackles and five interceptions.

After MSU Jackson continued his football career playing in the NFL. While with the Buffalo Bills he was a part of four different teams that reached the Super Bowl and won multiple individual awards.

We are very proud of Kirby Jackson and the accomplishments he has achieved. This M-Club induction is well deserved.

Play Ball!

The baseball field at Diane Jackson Memorial Park is coming to life.  The Stampede youth baseball team now calls our park their practice field.  The team was formed Spring of 2022 with young guys representing Sturgis and the surrounding communities.

Leading the team is coach Kain Elinberg.  Coach Kain has been actively involved in the baseball community for many years.  He has coached, umped, and supported youth athletics in many ways.  With his experience and love of the sport, when Coach Kain moved back to Sturgis wanted to build a team of local kids.  With help of dedicated parents Stampede was formed.

The players on the team are ages 10 and under.  This is a gritty group of players who are making our town proud.

Sturgis Participates in MSU Class Project

May 2022- During the Spring semester of 2022, the Town of Sturgis and several local homeschooled students had the opportunity to work with MSU graduate student, Carmen Kelly on a class project. This project was part of a class that is required at Mississippi State University for the Master of Science in Instructional Technology (MSIT) Multimedia concentration. Specifically, this assignment included a problem that needed to be solved, unruly individuals at council/board meetings, and a solution to that issue. The solution was to conduct a mock meeting and record it using Robert’s Rules of Order to conduct a successful meeting. You can learn more about Robert’s Rules here: https://robertsrules.com/

During this process, Mayor of Sturgis, Leah Brown and friends (pictured) went through Robert’s Rules using an agenda with items listed that follow the order of Robert’s Rules. The process for the videography took a little close to two hours, and there were many takes from different angles to help support the content needed to produce the video.

The student videographer, producer, and editor of the video, Carmen Kelly, had this to say: “Mayor Brown and friends were so delightful to work with, and made the experience all that more memorable. They were patient with me as I took several takes, from different angles, to assess and provide clear, informative video footage for the assignment. I ended up receiving an exceptional score on the assignment. I really appreciate and am grateful for Mayor Brown and friends for all their help.”

A big thank you goes out to our student volunteers and community member, Joeann Foster, who organized the group of volunteer actors.

Sturgis Town Cemeteries

The Town of Sturgis maintains two cemeteries in town. The Sturgis Cemetery located on Church Street next to the old Presbyterian Church and the Whitefield Cemetery off Sturgis - West Point Road.

Neither of these cemeteries are associated with a church so these cemeteries don't typically receive monetary support that usually comes from church offerings and memorial service donations. Therefore, these town cemeteries are in desperate need of financial support.

As of now, there is only enough money in the town cemetery fund to cover lawn maintenance through the end of June.

The town is very grateful for those who have donated to the town cemetery fund in the past. We now ask each of you to consider making another donation to help keep the final resting place of our friends and family well maintained.

To donate stop by Town Hall or mail checks to P.O. Box 97 Sturgis, MS 39769.

Fun Fact:  Watermelon is actually a vegetable and is part of the cucumber family.  According to Guinness World Records, the largest watermelon in the world was grown in Tennesse in 2013.  It weighed 350lbs!  Can you imagine picking that off the vine?!
