Safe Space 1 Year Anniversary |
|
|
The Safe Space Alliance is a nonprofit that helps identify, navigate, and create safe spaces for the LGBTQI+ community worldwide. Their online, searchable Safe Space directory lists digital and in-person spaces where the LGBTQI+ community can freely express themselves without fear; spaces that do not tolerate violence, bullying, or hate speech; spaces that “have got your back.” PCA received the designation as an official Safe Space last September. It felt like an honor and a duty at the same time. “This is not just a badge,” says PCA Secretary Sara T., “it is a promise and a challenge.” In the past year, PCA has made improvements in volunteer support and education, internal policy and procedure, marketing and branding, all with our Equity and Inclusion Committee aiming, guiding, and checking us along the way. We promise to keep rising to the challenge, year after year! Visit PCA’s Safe Space page. |

Meet A PCA Team: CHEER Seattle |
|
|
Hello CHEER Seattle! You are the feature Member Team for September! How fitting, since your team broke ground in a September... September 14, 2014 to be exact. (We're not stalking or anything.) Other than your founding, what are your favorite moments in CHEER Seattle history? Here are just a few favorites… - February 2015: CHEER Seattle received its official 501c3 nonprofit designation.
- June 2015: Participated in our first Seattle Pride Parade and first Seattle Pridefest main stage performance.
- May 2017: Attended Long Beach Pride with our largest contingent of more than 30 CHEER Seattle volun-cheerleaders.
- August 2018: Sent a small contingent to Paris to participate in our first Gay Games.
- September 2018: Gave our biggest donation ($25K!) since our inception to Entre Hermanos.
How does CHEER Seattle exemplify PCA's motto: Unite, Support, Develop? CHEER Seattle is proud to have alumni who went on to form Cheer DC, Cheer Portland, CHEER Tacoma, and CHEER Colorado. We consistently partner with these sister teams, in addition to other PCA teams, to share best practices that help our organizations grow and raise the most money possible for our beneficiaries. To date, CHEER Seattle has donated nearly $100,000 to local charities that provide programs supporting underrepresented groups, especially the LGBTQ+ community. And this last question comes from PCA's Equity and Inclusion Committee: What has CHEER Seattle done to elevate the importance of diversity, equity and inclusion in your org? The main goal of CHEER Seattle’s DEI Committee is to help our volunteers be the best allies for their teammates and other members of our diverse community. Each month, our committee creates an educational presentation highlighting different people/groups who are often targeted or marginalized in society. For example for Pride Month we created a presentation that focused on the Stonewall Riots, and how queer folks were responsible for a movement that we still celebrate today. We also have a system in place that allows our volunteers to tell our committee which diversity topics they want to learn more about so we can educate our team in ways they will find beneficial. The DEI Committee exists to help team members feel safe, seen, and heard. We strive to provide a safe space for anyone who needs it! |

Gay Games 11 Hong Kong, originally scheduled for November 2022, will be postponed to November 2023. This decision has been made primarily due to the unpredictable progression of COVID variants and the corresponding travel restrictions that continue to make it challenging for participants from around the world to make plans to travel to Hong Kong. According to the GGHK Team, “Postponement gives us, and participants around the world, added certainty that we can deliver on our promise to unite and celebrate diversity with the widest possible attendance from Asia and internationally.” For PCA voluncheerleaders, and the tens of thousands of cultural and sport participants from around the world, this gives us more time to TRAIN, more time to SAVE UP, and more time to PLAN for the BEST GAMES EVER. Speaking of planning… PCA will be meeting again soon to discuss Site Selection for 2026 Gay Games XII. The top bidding cities are Guadalajara, Munich, and Valencia. The Federation of Gay Games will vote in November 2021, and PCA will share the news as quickly as 5-6-7-8-BOOM! |
