INSIGHTS | The Push for Stakeholder Capitalism

DOWN TO BUSINESS

How a Biden administration could push companies further on climate

Business leaders are increasingly signaling their support for stakeholder capitalism through actions that benefit customers, suppliers, employees, and communities. Most recently, Nasdaq asked the SEC if it can require its 3,300+ companies to include at least one woman and one “diverse” director on their board. It's a timely move, as more than two thirds of investors want executive pay tied to ESG initiatives, such as DE&I. Case in point: proxy adviser Glass Lewis announced that it soon will “recommend voting against" a board that has fewer than two female directors. The public also wants action, with JUST Capital finding that 79% of Americans want corporate leaders to speak out on social issues over the next four years. That's echoed by U.S. President-elect Biden's call for a new era of stakeholder capitalism, which suggests that we may see greater political support for promoting corporate disclosure and stakeholder leadership. DATA | Giving in the Time of C19

This year's GivingTuesday was the largest day of giving yet. With a 25% increase from last year, Americans gave $2.5B at the start of the holiday season. The Harris Poll looked at 2020's impact on attitudes toward philanthropy, and found that many are more interested in donating than ever before. This was especially true for $100k+ income households, adults ages 35-49, and Gen Z and Millennials. Plus, survey results suggest that charitable giving is good for business. 86% of respondents said they would have a more positive view of companies that give to charities and 58% said they are more likely to buy from a company that gives to charity. Read more about one trend we hope will continue when 2020 is long gone.

ENVIRONMENT | REI's New Product Standards

REI is fighting climate change and inequity with refreshed sustainability standards that call for all 1,000+ of REI's brand partners to create an action plan to measure and reduce their carbon footprint. It also expands the list of third-party certifications that brands are encouraged to utilize, including Climate Neutral and  bluesign. To address inequity, REI is asking all brand partners to establish guidelines that promote diverse representation in their marketing across race, age, gender identity, body size and disability. First launched in 2018, REI's standards are designed to evolve, and this iteration shows how business can effectively use its influence to advance ever-higher expectations for good.

INSPIRATION | Purpose-driven Athletic Apparel

Under Armour and basketball star Stephen Curry announced the launch of their athletic apparel brand, Curry Brand, which aims to give young people equitable access to sports. Less than 30% of youth growing up in low-income households participate in organized sports, and low-income kids are six times more likely to quit sports because of financial costs. Curry Brand outlines three impact pillars to help tackle this issue, starting with basketball: refurbish courts to create safer places to play, fund sports program and product costs, and train coaches to better serve low-income kids. This is the latest chapter in Curry’s social activism, which includes organizing Black Lives Matter events, calling for women’s equality and inclusion, and raising funds to eliminate infectious diseases.

BRAND ACTIVATION | Social Impact Online Stores

Pine-Sol's new online store is a fresh example of how cause can infuse new relevance into a familar brand. Offering an unexpected bevvy of snappy, pine-centric products, The Pine-Store's proceeds, along with a $250k donation, will go to digitalundivided, a new nonprofit that supports entrepreneurs of color. The online store features merchandise for "brand superfans," including a footwear collection in partnership with Black director and designer Vashtie Kola. With this move, Pine-Sol joins the growing list of brands that have launched online stores to reach consumers directly and support charitable causes, such as General Mill's online activewear store that funds meals for hungry children and Frito-Lay's online gift shop that pledged $500,000 to Toys for Tots. Read more on this growing social impact trend.

BRAND ACTIVATION | Holiday Ad Power

Coca-Cola's holiday ad, ranked the most "powerful" of the season by market research firm Kantar, won over the firm's reviewers with what they saw as sentimentality and humor. It appeals to sentimentality by tapping the nostalgia of Coca-Cola's Christmas trucks, which shows tthat he impact of brand-building can span decades. In our opinion, Papa John's DIY, minimalist Giving More This Christmas speaks even louder and with a clearer purpose. In a short 30-second video, the pizza chain says that it is giving the money usually spent on its holiday campaign to charities fighting hunger and homelessness. It's a simple approach, which cuts through the noise of a lot of the other advertisements we've seen this season. Take a look.

VIDEOS WORTH WATCHING | If 2020 Was A Searchbar...

Like everything else in 2020, Google's Year In Search recap video struck a different cord. This year, people searched the word "why" more than ever before — the start of most questions we ask when looking for understanding, meaning and purpose. Top searches asked for information on the election results, coronavirus updates and symptoms, and Kobe Bryant. The 3-minute video features a poem narrated by Kofi Lost and an original score. This year, Google also revealed top trending searches across various categories, including people, news, and definitions. Find out more about what the world wanted to know in 2020.
