Evaluating Websites

The ABCD Method for Evaluating Websites

In the last newsletter, we featured a lesson on using Google Advanced Search when using the open web to locate information. This time the focus is on how to evaluate that information for reliability and validity using the ABCD Method. It's essential that students understand that much of what is posted online is unreliable and invalid, both for class assignments and for real-world applications.

You probably already know that Kahoot! is a game-based learning platform that makes it easy to create, share and play fun learning games. It's free for teachers and allows classes to play, learn, have fun and celebrate together. A recent survey conducted by Kahoot! showed that HALF of U.S. teachers use Kahoot! in their classrooms, and the majority collaborate on Kahoot! games with colleagues at their schools.

Kahoot! for schools has recently been released as an upgrade to help teachers better collaborate as teams. Teachers can now co-create, edit and share learning games together within departments, schools, or even districts in a private team space. Other new features include:

  • A folder structure for organizing teachers' games in 'My Kahoots' AND in the team space by subject, grade, department or other criteria.
  • Detailed reports that track student progress and can be shared between educators and admins.
  • Removal of all ads.
  • Editable game templates.
  • Boost school spirit and student engagement by including the school’s logo or mascot in all kahoots (Go Eagles!).

Book It! Cart

If you are having your students participate in the Book It! initiative, where they read a book or magazine of their choice for 30 minutes a week during class, then you may find the Book It! cart helpful. You can take the cart from the library before class (or send a student down for it) and have students select reading materials. There's no need to sign it out ahead of time - it's available on a first come, first served basis!

A Heart in a Body in the World

by Deb Caletti

"When everything has been taken from you, what else is there to do but run?

So that’s what Annabelle does—she runs from Seattle to Washington, DC, through mountain passes and suburban landscapes, from long lonely roads to college towns. She’s not ready to think about the why yet, just the how—muscles burning, heart pumping, feet pounding the earth. But no matter how hard she tries, she can’t outrun the tragedy from the past year, or the person—The Taker—that haunts her.

Followed by Grandpa Ed in his RV and backed by her brother and two friends (her self-appointed publicity team), Annabelle becomes a reluctant activist as people connect her journey to the trauma from her past. Her cross-country run gains media attention and she is cheered on as she crosses state borders, and is even thrown a block party and given gifts. The support would be nice, if Annabelle could escape the guilt and the shame from what happened back home. They say it isn’t her fault, but she can’t feel the truth of that.

Through welcome and unwelcome distractions, she just keeps running, to the destination that awaits her. There, she’ll finally face what lies behind her—the miles and love and loss…and what is to come." -Goodreads

Audiobook of the Month

Life After Life

by Kate Atkinson

"What if you could live again and again, until you got it right?

On a cold and snowy night in 1910, Ursula Todd is born to an English banker and his wife. She dies before she can draw her first breath. On that same cold and snowy night, Ursula Todd is born, lets out a lusty wail, and embarks upon a life that will be, to say the least, unusual. For as she grows, she also dies, repeatedly, in a variety of ways, while the young century marches on towards its second cataclysmic world war.

Does Ursula's apparently infinite number of lives give her the power to save the world from its inevitable destiny? And if she can - will she?" -Goodreads

"The true story of a prominent psychiatrist, his young patient, and the past-life therapy that changed both their lives.

As a traditional psychotherapist, Dr. Brian Weiss was astonished and skeptical when one of his patients began recalling past-life traumas that seemed to hold the key to her recurring nightmares and anxiety attacks. His skepticism was eroded, however, when she began to channel messages from the space between lives, which contained remarkable revelations about Dr. Weiss' family and his dead son. Using past-life therapy, he was able to cure the patient and embark on a new, more meaningful phase of his own career." -Goodreads
