Happy Spring,

 

This is one of our favorite times of the year as the earth thaws, the migratory birds start to return and the tree buds wait to unfurl their leaves until the days become consistently warmer. Soon everything will be in fresh lime color and full of life with vitality, promise and possibility.

 

As we feel and see Mother Life move into the next life cycle, we feel it within our ourselves too! We have the whole year ahead of us and want to see the visions of our dreams that we've created this winter form into reality.

 

Take your time coming out of hibernation and make sure you unwind, do your long stretching, breathe and focus on some of the fundamentals of movement before you just go out for that Earth Day 10K next month! Make it a process of readying yourself for your summer projects, dreams and goals.

The Myofascial Movement Toolbox

We have created a myofascial First-Aid Kit to supplement your toolboxes with certain quick exercises/releases to help relieve acute or chronic pain for specific areas of your body. Here is a beneficial release for low back, glute or anterior quad pain.

 

Posterior Hip Capsule Myofascial Stretch: This exercise is designed to release posterior hip capsule tightness usually caused by an anterior pelvic tilt which jams the femur when going into flexion while squatting, sitting, walking, or running. This release will help improve the hip's ability to externally rotate and prevent the pinching in the hip or tightness/pain in the glute.

 

Instructions: Start in a quadruped position and place your right leg across your left calf. Place your left elbow next to the left kneecap and reach with your right arm overhead. Your right leg should be across your body. With this reach you should feel a stretch in your left lateral posterior hip/glute area. As you take a full breath into your diaphragm and fill up your posterior ribcage with air, reach with your right arm a little each time along with lengthening your right leg a little bit more on your exhale. You may also hold onto to something with your right arm and create a constant reach. Work up to 15 breath cycles in this position. You can try on the opposite side, but most often the tightness is in the left hip capsule for those with an anterior pelvic tilt, regardless of which side the pain is located.
