Farm-based school programs are back in session!

We are happy to have our Pacific Beach High School Farm Class and Therapeutic Horticulture students back on the farm with us! We started this year with lessons covering our global food systems, the importance of eating locally, and the concepts of sustainable farming and agroecology. Our PBHS students have planted over 500 beets, rows of snap peas, carrots, cucumbers and radishes. They also participated in science experiments to learn about the consequences erosion can have on agriculture by simulating a massive flood. The students hypotheses were correct- plant roots are necessary to stabilize soil and support a healthy soil structure that doesn’t erode as easily! Learn more about each program on our website.

Thank you to our supporters for making these programs possible: City of San Luis Obispo, County of San Luis Obispo, Janssen Foundation, Rotary de Tolosa, San Luis Coastal Unified School District, Sprouts Foundation, and individual donors.

Garden for All

We broke ground on our Garden for All project! A Garden For All is a fully accessible garden and our first step as part of a larger effort to increase universal accessibility farm-wide. We have made it halfway to our $20,000 fundraising goal to build the garden! Click here to make a contribution.

NOTES FROM FARMER SHANE

We Planted Olive Trees!

About three months ago we planted over 350 olive trees here at City Farm, and we expect to make City Farm olive oil in about 3 years. We went with a variety called Lecciana, planted using the SHD (super high density) style. The trees are spaced 5 feet apart within rows, spaced 12 feet apart. Like grapes in a vineyard, the trees will grow into solid hedges that can be harvested and pruned by machine. They'll also create necessary windbreaks once they mature. Olives are drought tolerant, and have relatively low pest pressure.

Thanks to Olea Farm for selling us the trees and installing them!
