Getting Clarity on Your Money

Roadblocks to feeling

good about your money.

The Saver, the Spender, the Gambler, the Ostrich, the Worrier, the Cash Splasher, the Hoarder, the Compulsive Moneymaker. There are many so-called money personality types. The actual terms don't matter - what does matter is the beliefs, feelings and actions that lead you to "be" a certain way with money.

It all starts in childhood...

Our experience as kids and what we learned from our parents about money has probably shaped us in some way. As we moved through life and became independent, we added other elements into our money personalities. But some beliefs and values are healthier than others.

Mental roadblocks

Money is a source of worry or stress for many people. Why? Often it's because we haven't fully figured out how to deal with our finances properly. There's something nagging at the back of our minds and this dissonance causes worry.

Once you recognize what your beliefs and feelings are around money, you can probably identify your mental roadblocks around why you haven't dealt with the nagging - or blindingly obvious - money issues.

For example....

My money roadblock is scarcity. I have a scarcity mindset around money and time, which impacts me in all kinds of ways. On the money side, scarcity causes me to feel uncomfortable, irritated, guilty, or even angry when I have to spend money on something that I think is unnecessary or frivolous. Parking tickets enrage me. Overpriced bagels at the airport make my internal temperature rise. I'm learning to identify why I feel that way, and to try and let it go. It's just money. It's going to be ok. I don't have to hang on to it so tightly.

Take some time to think about this: how do your beliefs and feelings about money get in the way of your financial happiness? With this piece of information, you can develop tactics and strategies to overcome these roadblocks, and finally take the money worry off your list.
