Issue 1

It's the start of 2023 and time for my new project, a newsletter for my students and other people interested in the English language, containing useful tips, recommendations and much more....

Why write a newsletter?

The aim is to give you a nudge to do something to improve your English and I get to practice my writing skills at the same time. Win win!

Even if you only make it to the end of the newsletter, you'll have done something positive.

Here are a few things that I'll be talking about:

  • The questions my students ask

  • My latest blog posts

  • Useful resources

  • How to stay motivated

  • Fossilized errors

  • Linguistics

  • English grammar

  • Books, films and more

I'll also mention the courses I offer and any special events such as English language pub quizzes and concerts in the pipeline.

So today I'll start by telling you about one of my favourite resources. Regular students will probably know that I'm going to mention Skell. It's a website where you can check how words are used in English by reading through the example sentences. Not all of the sentences are perfect but there should be enough of them to give you a good idea about the word and the way it is used.

Have you tried it yet? I'm sure you'll find it useful.

Latest blog posts

I've added new topics for the conversation classes. We'll be watching Jane Fonda and Lily Tomlin talk about the value of female friendships and reading an article by one of my favourite journalists about celebrities and what they are really like. Even if you're not in the conversation class you might still enjoy reading the articles and watching the videos.

You can read more about Skell by checking the resource section of my blog.

There is also a new post about a great book that I've just read. It's a whodunnit set in a retirement community in England. Any guesses what it might be?
